“We knew because of social media we were going to have a good crowd, but never like that. Especially because the doors just open, and we were the first on stage after people went to be at probably 6am. It was amazing. Very surprising!”
There were many teenage girls at this weekend’s Lollapalooza concert in Grant Park, but probably only one that was flanked by the Secret Service. Word is President Obama’s daughter Malia was there.

“It’s great, I don’t know if it’s the internet or our fans, but people are new to music so much sooner than the last album. People were singing the lyrics to these songs sometimes the first time they were hearing them live, that was really cool.”
While the band doesn’t believe they have any radio hits, there are definitely some songs from the Avett Brothers that XRT listeners think are hits. The Lollapalooza crowd clearly agreed because they sang right along with the boys.
“Chicago really is our American home,” Hansard said. The weather during Lollapalooza has even been reminiscent of his home in Ireland. Hansard played during the rain on Sunday on the Lakeshore stage. When talking to Marty before his set, he hoped for the showers to continue.
