Original Band Names, Before They Were Famous [Part 1]

The band met at the Abingdon School in Oxfordshire in 1985. The group originally coined themselves “On A Friday” because they would practice together every Friday in the school’s music room. After signing with EMI in 1991, the band changed their name to Radiohead at the request of EMI. Radiohead was taken from a song title from the Talking Heads album True Stories. It’s only fitting that a group with such an eclectic history went through several different names (and even variations on their current name) before settling on The Beatles. Some of the names the band used were The Quarrymen, The Blackjacks, The Beatals, The Silver Beetles, Johnny and The Moondogs, and Long John and The Beetles. It was rumored that the group was named after Eddie Vedder’s grandmother’s peyote laced jam. The group went by Green River and Mother Love Bone before settling on Mookie Blaylock. Due to obvious copyright issues with the basketball player of the same name, the group settled on Pearl Jam. (Photo by Rob Loud/Getty Images)

As the band shifted members they changed their name to Malice. After a reshuffling of the group, they rebranded themselves as The Easy Cure. This one is a doozy. Anyone that has seen It Might Get Loud knows that U2 formed after drummer Larry Mullen posted an ad in his school’s bulletin board to form a band. What was this group initially called? The Larry Mullen Band. (Photo by Ian Gavan/Getty Images)

After Ozzy Osbourne saw a cheap brand of talcum powder in his mothers bathroom, he decided to call his first band The Polka Tulk Blues Band. After shortening their name to Polka Tulk and then Earth, Ozzy and crew finally settled on Black Sabbath. The Polka Tulk Blues Band is much less metal than Black Sabbath anyway.
