A Bonnaroo 5K Race, Say What?

Have you ever heard of a 5k run during a music festival in full swing? Well now you have. This year Bonnaroo will be hosting its first ever 5k Roo Run, which will commence on Saturday, June 15th, during performances by Death Grips, Solange, and The Tallest Man on Earth. The race will wind its way around the campgrounds in what is sure to be a great time. So great that bibs will be provided and be required to participate.

To register, Bonnaroo goers will have to pay an entrance fee of $5. All proceeds go to the Bonnaroo Work Fund. All are welcome, whether intoxicated or not, for an interesting sweat and dirt covered run in the sun.

Marker’s Weekend Live Blues Pick

A trio of blues players is up from New Orleans this weekend for a stop at FitzGerald’s. It’s seems like appearances by the best blues artists from the Crescent City here in the Windy City are becoming more rare, all the more reason to check out the Joe Krown Trio featuring Walter Wolfman Washington and Russel Batiste, Jr. Saturday night at the Berwyn roadhouse. Below I’ll attach the press release from FitzGerald’s.

The month leading up to the Chicago Blues Festival (see the line-up we posted here in April) has been deemed Blues Month in Chicago. Making the case is DCASE, the city’s Department of Cultural Affair and Special Events, which is presenting events all over town nearly every day until Blues Fest. Saturday afternoon, for example, you can see a performance this Saturday afternoon by Big Time Sarah at the Chicago Park District/Austin Town Hall Auditorium, 5610 W. Lake St., on the Green Line, from 12:15 to 1:15pm for free.

Another show you should be aware of is a tribute to the recently deceased West Side Blues artist, Jimmy Dawkins featuring Billy Flynn, Rockin’ Johnny Burgin, Bobby Radcliff and many special guests, including Jim Schutte, Keith Scott, Nick Laramie, Steve Sharp, and possibly Eddie Shaw. Flying in from NYC- a rare Chicago appearance from the incredible blues guitarist/singer Bobby Radcliff. This show begins at 9:30pm at B.L.U.E.S. on Halsted.

There’s a wealth of great blues in Chicago leading up to and including Blues Fest weekend. We’ll try to keep up here on 93XRT.com/Blues.

New Orleans funk & soul meets Milwaukee rhythm & sway — 2 sets each!

Berwyn, Ill.— Anyone who’s been to the New Orleans club The Maple Leaf on a Sunday evening knows the JOE KROWN TRIO. Joe Krown (Hammond B-3), Walter Wolfman Washington (guitar, vocals) and Russell Batiste Jr. (drums, background vocals) started playing together in March 2007. Their Sunday night gigs are now legendary.

The combination of Washington’s soulful vocals with the big sound of the Hammond B-3 and the masterful drumming skills of Batiste has developed it’s own unique sound. The trio recorded and released a live CD, Live at the Maple Leaf in 2008. They also won a 2009 Big Easy Award in the Best Rhythm and Blues Band category. Stripping back to five pieces has opened up space for the understated command of Jennings’ keyboard and saxophonic thinking. New Chicago Music On This Sunday’s Local Anesthetic

Cameron McGill was kind enough to send me an advance of his next set, Gallows Etiquette, and I gotta say, it’s quite good. Cameron has always been very talented but the continued honing of his songcraft into this new set of beauties is inspirational. Talent is one thing; shaping it in to the best that it can be is another. The new disc won’t be out until the fall so this is your chance to know how good Gallows Etiquette is well before your non-XRT listening neighbor. You’ll have all summer to say you heard it here first.
Also in the queue is Phil Angotti‘s new solo side. Many of us first heard Phil’s work with his band The Idea and their contribution to Yuletunes back in 1991. “It’s About That Time” was the opener on that Holiday classic and deservedly so. Phil led The Idea thru most of the 90′s Solo disc number 4 or 5, Life and Rhymes, doesn’t stray far from his love of anglo-pop but there’s the old axiom of “don’t mess with what works” that applies here. Phil has got a show at Space next week that I’ll tell about when I give the new disc a spin as part of a show of new Chicago music on this week’s Local Anesthetic, Sunday night at 7:30 on XRT. Sure, I’ll have other stuff, too. C’mon, man; it’s only Friday. I’ll have it all together by then. Don’t you worry about a thing.

Bono, Richard Branson, Olivia Wilde Join Matt Damon’s ‘Toilet Strike’

In an effort to end the water crisis that is affecting millions of people, 780,000,000 to be exact, Olivia Wilde, Bono and Richard Branson have joined in Matt Damon’s “toilet strike.”

Damon, who announced his strike in February, stated that those in the effort “won’t go to the bathroom until everyone in the world has access to clean water and sanitation.”

The strike that is led by the Damon and the advocacy group he co-founded, Water.org, are seeking to end the water crisis that is leaving millions without accesses to clean water and sanitation that can lead to illness and even death.

While the idea of the strike is a serious one, Damon and the other celebrities involved have turned to humor in order to get more awareness. In a video posted to YouTube on May 22nd, Wilde, Bono and Branson joke about how Damon crashed their not-so-secret secret meeting.

“I remember when Matt first brought up the idea, it was at a meeting of the Illuminati,” said the U2 frontman.

Wilde joked and added, “Bono was so mad. I only got in because I am an android from the future.”

Branson also added some humor to the video adding, “Bono started beating Matt with a two-by-four.”

However, alongside the jokes, the celebrities cited facts about the water crisis and what people could do to help.

“Millions of people each day spend hours just fetching clean water,” Bono says in the new public service announcement. “780,000,000 people – that’s one in nine – lacks access to safe water.”

Damon appears at the end of the video to encourage others to “join the millions of famous people who’ve already joined my strike. And remember, if you don’t use the toilet, you’re a celebrity.”

Paul McCartney On Pussy Riot: ‘Further Incarceration Will Be Harmful’

Paul McCartney recently sent handwritten letters addressed to Russian authorities to voice his support for the two Pussy Riot band members that remain incarcerated in Russian prisons.

This is the second time McCartney has expressed support for the three band members who were originally arrested in March of 2012. Three members of the Russian feminist punk-rock collective, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Yekaterina Samutsevich and Maria Alyokhina, were arrested and charged with hooliganism after protesting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow’s main cathedral, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, in February 2012.

The band members were convicted of the charges in August of 2012 and were sentenced to two years in prison. However, after less than two months, Samutsevich was released on an appeal. The spark for recent interest from McCartney came after Alyokhina was denied access to her own parole hearing. As of May 22, Alyokhina has declared she will be on a hunger strike in protest of being denied the right to attend her hearing. Tolokonnikova, also still in prison, was denied parole on April 26.

The former Beatle stressed the Russian administration should consider parole for Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova.

In the letter regarding the case of Alyokhina, McCartney wrote and shared on his website, “My personal belief is that further incarceration for Maria will be harmful for her and the situation as a whole, which, of course, is being watched by people all over the world.”

McCartney continues in the letter, “In the great tradition of fair-mindedness which the Russian people (many of whom are my friends) are famous for, I believe that you granting this request would send a very positive message to all the people who have followed this case.”

In a separate hand-written letter, McCartney stressed concern for Tolokonnikova as well. He writes, “I have had a long relationship with the Russian people, and, with this in mind, I am making the following request in a spirit of friendship for my many Russian acquaintances who, like me, believe in treating people – all people, with compassion and kindness.”

McCartney is not the only musician that has voiced support for Pussy Riot band members. Madonna, Sting, and Yoko Ono, have publicly supported the group.

Brian May On ‘The Voice’: ‘Dull, Dumb, Depressing’

You may be a fan of NBC’s reality TV competition, The Voice, but Queen guitarist Brian May certainly isn’t.

He recently spoke out against the British version of the show, which features judges Jesse J, Will.i.am, Tom Jones and Danny O’Donoghue.

May wrote on his own website, “Sorry, hate to be negative but The Voice is the dullest, dumbest, most depressing show on TV.” Adding, “It’s the ultimate insult to music and to performers.”

Though we are not sure May seems to understand the concept about the show and the blind audition rounds. “Every time I catch a glimpse of young singers busting their guts trying to win somebody’s attention, who is rudely sitting with their back to them… I feel sick. I hope this vile show dies a natural death very soon,” May wrote.

Apparently May doesn’t hate everything about the show. He does seem to be a fan of Tom Jones, though he wishes that Jones would decide to walk away from The Voice. And of course, May isn’t totally against music-based competition shows: May and Queen drummer Roger Taylor have performed on American Idol.

Producer Steve Lillywhite On Axl Rose’s Voice: ‘Like Fingers On A Chalkboard’

Producer Steve Lillywhite has one of the best resumes in rock and roll: he has worked on records by Morrissey, Peter Gabriel, the Dave Matthews Band, Phish, The Rolling Stones and, most famously, U2. One band that isn’t on that list: Guns N’ Roses. He came rather close, though, to getting the Axl Rose experience, but as he told KROQ‘s Kevin & Bean Show, he pulled the plug on that.

Apparently, Lillywhite was one of many producers considered for GNR’s loooooong-delayed Chinese Democracy album (finally released in 2008), and he actually took a meeting with Axl Rose to discuss it.

“I was summoned to Los Angeles to meet with Axl Rose, we went for sushi, and then we went to the studio to listen to some tracks and he played me some instrumentals,” Lillywhite said. “I thought, ‘I can understand why he’d want me to work on this.’ And then I said, ‘Do you have anything with vocals on it?’ He said, ‘Yeah, I’ve got one song.’”

It was at that point that Lillywhite remembered why working with GNR would be unpleasant (besides Axl’s famously volatile personality).

“I was listening to it and I thought ‘Oh my God, I’d forgotten how much I hate his voice.’ I’m sorry! To some people, Axl Rose is royalty. To me, it’s like fingers on a chalkboard. Now, He was a very nice guy. We finished the evening – he paid – the next morning, the manager called and said, ‘Steve, you’re in. He thinks your fantastic. ‘ I said “I’m sorry, I don’t think I’m the right man for this job.” And that was it and I left it at that.”

It’s likely that Rose was upset by this, and the next development in the story reads like a bit of payback. “I wouldn’t be telling this story,” Lillywhite says, “except, the next issue of Rolling Stone came out and it said ‘Axl Rose Turns Down Steve Lillywhite!’ I would have said nothing if he said nothing!”

Lillywhite most recently produced Thirty Seconds To Mars‘ new album, Love Lust Faith + Dreams, which was released earlier this week (May 21).

Bonnaroo Sampler [Free Download]

It’s almost that time of year again, where you and your buddies take a road trip down to Manchester, Tennessee for a weekend of camping, fun, and most importantly great music. Some of the festival’s headliners include some 93XRT favorites like Paul McCartney, Mumford & Sons, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Wilco, Bjork, Tame Impala, just to name a few.

The rest of billing boasts some pretty talented yet underexposed acts, so in honor of the upcoming festival, Noisetrade compiled a Bonnaroo Sampler music list, which you can download for free. Here’s who you can find on the sampler.

Lord Huron “Time To Run”
This LA band released their debut album, Lonesome Dreams in 2012 which features the lead single of the same name. The band played Coachella this year alongside Passion Pit and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Glen Hansard “High Hope”
A man of many talents, songwriting and singing are at the top of Hansard’s list. The singer’s latest album, The Cost was released in 2006, yet Hansard continues to release singles and EP’s such as “Take the Heartland”.

Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors “Wine We Drink”
Straight from Nashville, the band recently released their fourth album, Good Light which includes the catchy single, “Tennessee”. The group is currently on tour with the rock band, Need To Breathe.

Father John Misty “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings”
Also known as J. Tillman is a folk singer/songwriter with seven studio albums under his belt. His most recent release, Fear Fun was released in 2012 and featured the single “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Signs”.

Allen Stone “Celebrate Tonight”
Often referred to as the “hippie with soul”, the singer’s latest self-titled album was released in 2012 by ATO Records. Last month, Stone was seen at SXSW before making his way across the globe for performances in both Australia and Japan.

Aoife O’Donovan “Briar Rose”
Not only is O’Donovan a solo artist she’s also the lead singer for the bluegrass/string band, Crooked Still and a member of the folk-noir trio, Sometymes Why. The singer’s first solo record Blue Light was released in 2010. Her forthcoming album, Fossils is scheduled for release on June 11th.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit “Alabama Pines”
The Alabama-based quartet’s debut self-titled album was released in 2009 and the release of two other albums followed. With the most recent being, Live From Alabama. The band will soon embark on a summer tour.

Sea Wolf “Old Friend”
With three-studio albums, Sea Wolf has been making their name known within the indie-folk music scene. The band’s debut album, Leaves in the River was released in 2007. The group is currently on tour and is scheduled to perform with Josh Ritter at the Vic, April 27th.

Trixie Whitley “I Need Your Love”
As an up and coming artist, Whitley has released three EP’s, is a member of the band, Black Dub, and is currently on a global tour. The singer’s recently released debut album, Fourth Corner features “ Breathe You In My Dreams” and the free downloadable track.

Two Gallants “My Love Won’t Wait”
The San Fran folk-rock duo recently released their fourth album, The Bloom and the Blight. This album follows up their self-titled album, Two Gallants. The band will soon embark on a worldwide tour with a stop in Chicago on June 26th at Lincoln Hall.

Futurebirds “Serial Bowls”
Well-known for their fun and energetic performances and their unique indie-rock harmonies, Futurebirds just released their second album, Baby Yoga. The album features the single “Heavy Weights”. The band is currently on tour with a scheduled performance in Chicago on May 17th at Schuba’s Tavern.

Reptar “Houseboat Babies”
One of the newest bands to hit the music scene, Reptar released their debut album Body Faucet in 2012. The album features “Stuck in My Id” and “New House”.

Bombino “Azamane Tiliade”
Well-known from around the globe, this Tuareg guitarist and singer/songwriter from Niger has made his way on Bonnaroo’s sampler list. The singer’s most recent album is Nomad which took Bombino and his band traveling from Niger to Nashville to record.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue: Do To Me
Also referred to as Troy Andrews, is a trombone and trumpet player from the jazz capital of the world, New Orleans. The musician has a variety of both studio and live albums. His most recent album For True released in 2011.

All We Are Saying, Give The Arts A Chance

Lennon & McCartney are creating great art again. This time it’s Yoko Ono Lennon and Paul McCartney. Both have been involved for years in supporting arts education, and both have recently expanded those efforts.

McCartney established LIPA, the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts, in his old school building in 1996. He has been involved with the school through donations to teaching. He’s been known to show up for their graduation ceremonies as well. Sir Paul! Now they’ve just announced that they will start a Free Primary School for students ages 4 to 11. The government has given it’s approval and they plan to open in the fall. They are aware that teaching the arts also leads to the kids learning life skills and understand how to work with others. It was Paul’s ability to work with three others that led to the band that changed the world!

And Yoko went back to Liverpool to launch The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus that left to go to London and then on to cover Europe. This isn’t the first Lennon Bus, but it’s new to Europe. It’s a traveling workshop where young people can learn to produce music, video and photography projects. The bus in the US has been traveling for 16 years. The European bus will be in London June 14th through the 23rd during the Meltdown Festival. Yoko curated the festival this year. She thinks John would be “very satisfied” with this project. I think she’s right.

JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound ‘Howl’ At Saki For Album Release In Chicago’s Logan Square [Watch]

Chicago’s soul-rockers, JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound, have just released their third studio album on May 21st. The new album is titled Howl, and yesterday they also performed material from the new release at Saki in Logan Square. The event was part of the “Off The Record” series put on by Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. “Off The Record: A Listening Party,” is a monthly party free of admission where guests can hear a new record, and sometimes actual performances and Q&A sessions from the artists as well.

From Chicago, JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound played a half hour of music from the new record including the song, “Rouse Yourself”. This is the second release the band has had with Bloodshot Records. In addition to the music, guests at Saki also got to see a live Q&A featuring JC and Uptown Sound guitarist Billy Bungeroth, conducted by Marty Lennartz.

The three of them discussed topics like soul music, and the band’s mission. Billy described the album helping them reach goals they had when the band was formed. “I feel like the mission was to play soul music with nostalgic and authentic features but in a new and original way, and we kind of fell off of that for a while, but we have found ourselves back on that mission with this record.” You can listen in and watch a performance of “Rouse Yourself”, below:

Warren Haynes On What To Expect From His Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration Tour

Warren Haynes keeps a busy schedule: He’s one-half of the guitar team in the Allman Brothers Band, he leads his own group Gov’t Mule, he has a solo band, and he occasionally plays solo acoustic shows. And next month, he’ll perform with ensembles larger than he’s ever worked with in the past. Between playing Allman Brothers show and the Govt’ Mule tour this summer, Haynes will lead a series of symphony orchestras on a tour that pays tribute to the late Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia.

“The Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration” kicks off June 18 in Pittsburgh, where Haynes will be joined by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The tour will continue with two bursts of dates throughout the summer, with Haynes being accompanied by local orchestras in each of the eight cities. (Full list of performances here.)

Haynes, of course, has a history with the Grateful Dead. He played in bassist Phil Lesh’s band, Phil Lesh & Friends, for years, and produced Lesh’s 2002 album There And Back Again. He also did some time in The Dead, which featured Grateful Dead members Lesh, guitarist/singer Bob Weir, and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann.

Haynes organizes some annual musical events — the Mountain Jam festival every summer and the Christmas jam in December — but he says this tour wasn’t his idea.

“We got a call from the people representing the Garcia Estate, saying they wanted to do a series of symphony shows doing Jerry’s music, and that they were going to have a few guest performers, and they wanted to know if I wanted to be the first guest artist,” he told Radio.com. “I was very honored.”

It turns out, Haynes had wanted to go the orchestral route for some time, but never had the right concept, until now.

“I’ve always wanted to do something with a symphony, but I never have, so it’s a really great challenge for me, and I was really psyched. I think it’s gonna be really amazing.”

Of course, a hallmark of both Garcia’s and Haynes’ music is improvisation. But how much can you improvise with an orchestra, particularly when you are performing with a different one every night?

“I felt like it was very important that we take the Grateful Dead spirit and to approach the symphonic production in a way that is different from the norm,” he explained. “I didn’t want it to be just like a symphony playing that music. We’re starting to figure out that there are ways to make it work. There are going to be certain windows that allow for improvisation. Other times, I have to keep my solos more part of the structure.”

John Fogerty & Dawes Perform ‘Someday Never Comes’ on Letterman [Watch]

Letterman’s having a pretty good week. On Monday night, The National ended the show with a performance of their song, “Don’t Swallow The Cap,” and last night John Fogerty closed with Dawes. What song did they play together? It was the Creedence classic, “Someday Never Comes.” Of course, the song can be found on the 1972 album, Mardi Gras, but a newer version (with Dawes) is included on Fogerty’s forthcoming album, Wrote a Song For Everyone. The album includes a couple of new songs, but the bulk of it is re-recorded Creedence classics with special guests such as Kid Rock, Tom Morello, My Morning Jacket, Bob Seger and Foo Fighters, to name a few.

Wrote a Song For Everyone will be released this coming Tuesday, May 28.

A sharp Brooklyn girl who helped put the Brill building on the musical map by growing up to be one of the greatest songwriters (often with husband/partner Gerry Goffin) of the modern era is honored (again) and with good reason. Although she is a popular and talented performer in her own right (her album Tapestry is one of the biggest albums of all time and her recent tour with James Taylor did boffo box office), many of her compositions are best known as done by others. Here’s a partial list:

A radical song for its day (one stands were unheard of once, at least on the top forty), it still packs a romantic punch.

Ms. King’s babysitter and one of the most propulsive dance songs ever.

What soft rock could and should be.

Lots of versions of this one, celebrating the essence of nostalgia with all of its glory and gloom, but Roger McGuinn and company do it best.

One of the greatest songs ever written about the suburbs. Still a good place to live.

Blues Month, Two Free Events Today

It’s time to be gearing up for the Chicago Blues Festival. The fest begins with an evening performance in Millennium Park on Thursday, June 6 starring Shemekia Copeland. It continues with day-long events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 7, 8 & 9 in Grant Park. There are blues events scheduled for almost every day from now till then by DCASE, The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. Today (5/23) there will be a free performance during the lunch hour at the Cultural Center downtown featuring a couple of Chicago’s top players, Harpman Matthew Skoller and piano player Johnny Iguana. The there will also be an “after work” set by Chicago blues singer Demetria Taylor.

The mid-day performance will begin at 12:15pm, the evening show from 5:30 to 7:00pm, both at the Chicago Cultural Center at 78 E. Washington at Michigan Avenue.

Part of the band’s charm is how varied their albums are. Three different band members take turns on lead vocals. Both Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball are fine lead guitarists.

With that in mind, don’t expect their version of The Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” to be a faithful rendition. It emerges from the Gomez filter as a beast of a different shine.

You Say It’s Your Birthday

Well I did a birthday tribute on Facebook this morning for Morrissey, but then I noticed some other fascinating birthdays for May 22nd. I couldn’t resist.

But lets start with Morrissey, 54 years old and former lead singer of the Smiths. Now with a solo career and a load of doctors’ notes to explain why he couldn’t make it to the concerts on his 2012-2013 tour, or attempt at a tour.

Bernie Taupin is 63 today. He has written all that poetry that people call lyrics for Elton John songs.

Now here’s where we take a left turn. The great jazz man Sun Ra was born this day in 1914. When you see Parliament/Funkadelic’s Mothership land, just know that Sun Ra was in outer space years before that. Amazing. You’ve gotta watch this. What a trip.

And last but not least, happy 200th birthday to Richard Wagner. Great composer. Kind of a creep. For more on that check my Classic Encounter blogs. So if you had a birthday dinner party with Morrissey, Bernie, Sun Ra and Wagner, it would be the most interesting night of your life, and Wagner would probably hit on your wife. Or worse.
