This past Monday I worked my first Downtown Sound event of the summer at Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago. I say my first, because there are many opportunities to go to these events for the rest of the summer, seeing as there are different performers every single Monday until the end of July. This past Downtown Sound featured Daniel Lanois and Brokeback.

Given that it was an extremely hot day, I saw no reason to bring a hoodie (or any warm clothing) because I could not imagine it getting even slightly chilly at night. I was wrong. As the night went on, a breeze came (a huge relief) and even storm clouds rolled in a bit later, accompanied by a decent temperature drop. As the rain came down, a rainbow appeared that arched right over the lake, causing a great sight and the need for several pictures to be taken. Weather-wise, the night was really cool (no pun intended).

That’s not to say that musically, the night wasn’t. Rather, it was a really enjoyable show. The band Brokeback opened up for Daniel Lanois. This band featured all instrumental tunes, consisting of two guitarists, a bassist, and a drummer. While their music was not soft by any means, it was very melancholic, with a jam-oriented feel. Often times, there would be an underlying motive (musical theme) that the lead guitarist would solo over and the band would then interact with and play off of each other.

Following Brokeback was the main event of the night, Daniel Lanois. Known for his success as a music producer, with albums by Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, U2 (including Joshua Tree), and more to his name, Lanois is also known for his own music. He began recording his own material in 1989, and since then has made nine albums.

I was very impressed with Daniel Lanois’ performance. Not only was his guitar playing excellent (mainly electric except for a beautiful pedal steel performance), but his voice was perfect for the style he was playing in. He has a very smooth, yet bluesy timbre to his voice. He often demonstrated his vocal ability by singing lines that directly correlated to what he was playing on the guitar, and he seemed to always be in tune. Joining in the singing was bassist Jim Wilson, who provided high range harmonic lines which made for some great moments, especially in the chorus of songs.

This was a great night with great music, and the fact that every Monday these concerts are free to the public is incredible. Stop by at these Downtown Sound events throughout the summer to see acts from Lee Fields & the Expressions, The Handsome Family, Dawes, and more.

Another weekend, another Blues Fest. This time in A-Town, aka Downtown Aurora. It seems this city’s center along the banks of the Fox River has reached a critical mass of entertainment venues. There’s the beautiful Paramount Theater, the Hollywood Casino, a good looking central business district with eateries and drinkeries, the recently redefined Two Brothers Roundhouse, and now the brand new RiverEdge Park and Music Pavilion. The city looked real good and over this past weekend drew a lot of people from near and far for some excellent live music.

This was the weekend of the 17th Annual Blues on the Fox festival. The scale is much smaller than the Chicago Blues Festival in terms of number of acts, length of the event, and crowds, but just as big in terms of blues star power. Friday evening starred Dr. John, and Saturday featured, along with others, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, and headliner Buddy Guy. (The photo above is during Robert’s early evening set and shows the layout of the venue, the photo below is around sunset during the Buddy set.) The music pavilion boasted good sound and light production, the fest had good crowd handling/security, easy, close-by and affordable parking, and a relaxed and friendly vibe. Oh, yeah, and good food and beer at reasonable prices and with manageable lines.

Almost directly across the street from the pavilion is the Two Brothers Roundhouse. This historic building is 70,000 square feet of restaurant and bar, serving very good food and a wide selection of that excellent Two Brothers Beer. This weekend they’ll be celebrating their 5th Annual Two Brothers Summer Festival starring Old ’97′s on Friday, Poi Dog Pondering on Saturday, and the Empty Can Band on Sunday. I know Bill Artlip will be there on Friday and I’ll get there as soon as I can after work on Saturday.

Another blues fest this weekend! That’s right. Blues on the Fox in Aurora. The Chicago Blues Festival just wrapped up on Sunday and now here comes another blues festival this weekend! This is no surprise, though, as Blues on the Fox has been around for 16 years now, making this the 17th annual. And it’s always the weekend right after the Chicago Blues Festival. This fest is way smaller than the Chicago fest with less space, fewer stages (just one), it’s only for one evening and the following afternoon and evening, and way fewer performers. But this is a fest of big names. Friday evening begins with J.J. Grey and Mofro at 7pm, then Dr. John at 9pm. Saturday the gates are at 2pm with The Stone Foxes at 3p, Tommy Castro and The Painkillers at 5p, Robert Randolph and The Family Band at 7p, and headliner Buddy Guy takes the stage at 9pm.

The fest takes place in the new RiverEdge Park. The park is situated along the Fox River in Downtown Aurora and features a new music pavilion. It’s easy to get to for drivers, bicyclists and transit riders as the park is just three miles from I-88 and very near parking at the Aurora Transportation Center, which is also where the Metra BNSF line arrives, and it’s right next to the Illinois Prairie Path along the Fox River.

Nearby are there are many restaurants and bars including the 70,000 square foot Two Brothers Brewing Company’s Roundhouse. Plus, the Ballydoyle Pub at 28 W New York St. will host after fest parties on Friday with The Pat Smillie Band and on Saturday with The Rockin’ Johnny Band featuring Willie Buck on Saturday.

Check back often for news of the blues at 93XRT.com/Blues.

If you’re a fan of comedy, Chicago is a great place to be. Improv studios and clubs galore, comedy buffs gravitate to this city and The TBS Just For Laughs Festival is satisfying our cravings for live comedy by organizing a number of performances throughout the area for the 2013 Festival. Just For Laughs consists of 59 comedy shows taking place June 11th-16th. With so many shows and so little time, we devised a list of troupes and comedians we think any lover of comedy should try and see.

1. Knuckleheads

If you’ve been watching Saturday Night Live recently, you know that Tim Robinson, Cecily Strong, and Aidy Bryant have been more than valuable additions to the cast. Lucky for us, the three have joined forces to create comedy troupe Knuckleheads and will be putting on multiple performances of improv, sketch comedy and more five times this week!

Tickets here!

2. Maria Bamford

I remember stumbling across The Maria Bamford Show two years ago and subsequently seeking out all of her work. Bamford’s anxious, jittery personas are central to her comedy and her performances (whether television, live, documentary, etc.) will leave you part-exhausted from laughter and part-concerned. Her already-commendable body of work is growing as I write this, so make sure to try and see her while she’s in town.

Tickets here!

3. Chelsea Peretti

A lot of people can relate to comedian Chelsea Peretti. She’s smart as a whip and very blatant, but she draws you in with her down-to-earth, self-deprecating and sarcastic humor. Her work through all comic media makes for a substantial, immersive show and if you have a chance to see one of her four sets, you should definitely check her out.

Tickets here!

4. David Cross & His Super Duper Pals

I think we’ve all seen David Cross on screen, but David Cross off screen is a whole other story. He takes off the actor’s veil and audiences see a much more raw, vulgar man before them. Add outrageous comedians Doug Benson, Brian Posehn, Paul F. Tompkins and Todd Glass to the mix and I honestly don’t know what to expect—what I do know is that it will be funny. And you won’t regret going.

Tickets here!

5. Seth Meyers with Special Guests Al Madrigal and Hannibal Buress

Best known for his work on SNL as a cast member, head writer, and weekend update correspondent, Seth Meyers is also an excellent standup comic. I saw him live in April 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed watching him lampoon himself, politics, and the audience. And Al Madrigal and Hannibal Buress are joining him? Can’t handle it. You may recognize Madrigal as a regular correspondent on The Daily Show and Hannibal Buress as a former writer AND actor of 30 Rock (remember the recurring homeless guy?).

Tickets here!

We’re just getting into the summer routine again, and hey, just like the fall, winter and spring, many of us are looking for high-quality entertainment. I don’t know why I brought up the season, just a way to break the ice, I guess. This weekend we have our old friends Fleetwood Mac back in town for another arena show, a singer-songwriter from Akron, OH at the cozy confines of Lincoln Hall, and one of America’s most famous (and funny) political commentators plays one of the most gorgeous venues in town.

Fleetwood Mac @ Allstate Arena, Friday, June 14

They were just here back in April for a show at United Center, but so what, we’ll roll the red carpet out for Fleetwood Mac whenever and wherever. Why all the touring with multiple arena shows in Chicago? Don’t ask too many questions, just enjoy the music. Tickets here. And look, I know Christine McVie isn’t playing with ‘em anymore, and the song below probably won’t be performed on Friday night, but I’m still going to post “Everywhere.”

Joseph Arthur @ Lincoln Hall, Saturday, June 15

Sometimes he plays with Ben Harper, Dhani Harrison, Jeff Ament, and/or The Lonely Astronauts, and sometimes he plays on his own. One of the hardest working, most prolific performers in all of rock ‘n’ roll will be playing for us in the acoustically perfect Lincoln Hall on Saturday night. Tickets here.

Bill Maher @ The Chicago Theatre, Sunday, June 16

Does he appeal to everyone across the political spectrum? Nah, but that’s not what he’s trying to do. He speaks his mind and if you don’t like it, you don’t have to go. You also don’t have to watch his brilliant television show on HBO. The show is part of the TBS Just For Laughs series, and you can find more information here.

The list of special guests that the Rolling Stones have welcomed on their current “50 & Counting Tour” keeps growing. Tom Waits in Oakland, Katy Perry in Las Vegas, Dave Grohl in Anaheim, Taj Mahal, Sheryl Crow and Taylor Swift in Chicago, and last night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Win Butler of Arcade Fire. Win joined the gang for “The Last Time” on vocals and guitar as you can see below. Sometimes fans recording videos can be annoying (like, when they’re standing in front of you holding their phone up, blocking your view), but sometimes they come in handy for the kids that weren’t able to make it to the show (today). Positives & negatives, ya know?

Arcade Fire have spent time in the past year recording a new album at the DFA studios in New York, and James Murphy has also been on board for the recording sessions. As of right now, no word on a release date for AF album #4, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for sometime in 2013.

Somehow both of the artists performing at Lincoln Hall last night managed to make me start crying in the middle of the venue. And, you know what? I’m not even embarrassed. These amazing, heart-felt performances deserved tears…. And I saw other concertgoers crying too! So, I swear I wasn’t the only one.

The night opened up with Sanders Bohlke, a Mississippi-born neo-soul and folk artist. Just one man and all of his instrumental gadgets, Bohlke really floored me last night with his set. Bohlke’s melancholic, soulful lyrics gave me goose bumps everywhere. His style is reminiscent of a Local Natives/Black Keys fusion, and it was definitely working for him last night. Audience members flocked to the front of the stage once they got a taste of Bohlke’s talent, and he had us hooked for the rest of the night.

Bohlke came out with his self-titled, debut album in 2007. He joined Rachael Yamagata on this tour to promote his sophomore album, Ghost Boy. This hauntingly beautiful album came out earlier this year, and the music video for the title track was just recently released.

After Bohlke left me feeling raw and chilled to the bone, I wasn’t even sure if I could take another heartbreaking performance, which is exactly what Rachael Yamagata delivered. (For the record, I really enjoyed it. But I also was sobbing like a baby in the middle of Lincoln Hall…. Tiny detail.) Yamagata, who is known for being “the troubadour of heartbreak,” is also a total firecracker of a lady. Her audience interaction was amazing—she even blew us kisses!

Even better than her vibrant personality and the audience interaction, however, was her heartfelt performance. Yamagata is a powerhouse vocalist, who also plays guitar and piano, and many of her songs feature a mini string section with a viola and cello. She featured songs off of her latest EP Heavyweight, including “It’ll Do,” and also played a couple of songs that she said were inspired by her time living in Chicago, like “Meet Me by the Water.” You can purchase a copy of her latest album here.

Another beautiful day for a Blues Fest! (Find links to Blues Fest and all other weekend blues shows by starting HERE) Tom Marker here reporting on the happenings at The Petrillo Music Shell. There are several stages presenting wonderful and creative blues musicians all day at the Chicago Blues Festival, but my assignment is to M.C. the events at the Petrillo evening sets so that’s what I’ll talk about.

Last night was a really good one. Earnest “Guitar” Roy started things off with a solid set of Clarksdale/Chicago Blues. Irma Thomas was amazing. Her voice was so strong, so smooth, so solid, so right on the money and so soulful. Her band, The Professionals, once again lived up to their name. And Bobby Rush! What can I say, his records, especially his latest, Down In Louisiana, are often straight forward yet highly original blues. His shows, however, are like R rated Mississippi soul circuit meets Vegas extravaganzas. When you see Bobby Rush perform you know you are never again going to see anything like it unless you see Bobby Rush again. His show is at least as much about his big bottomed dancers as it is about the music. At one point Bobby is checking out a dancer and says, “From this side? Nice! From this side? Nice! Straight from behind? Nice, Nice!” A long way from Muddy Waters, but it was still the blues and the crowd was on their feet for the whole show!

I am so looking forward to tonight. I am Ronnie Baker Brooks’ biggest fan. For years he has performed at Blues Fest, but on the smaller stages or as plating as part of another performer’s set. Tonight, for the first time ever, on the big stage at the Chicago Blues Festival: Ronnie Baker Brooks with the Ronnie Baker Brooks Blues Band! I can’t wait!

Then, Chicago’s number one soul man, Otis Clay! But not just Otis Clay, The Otis Clay Revue! Otis will likely come out in a bright colored suit matching from head to toe. He’ll have his stellar sidemen plus a large horn section and as many as three women singers. “Trying to Live My Life Without You,” “Walk a Mile in My Shoes,” “Nickel and a Nail”! Again, I can’t wait.

To close the evening, The Memphis Soul Revue. R&B/Funk/Soul legends the Bar Kays! “Soul Finger!” They’ll be backing Eddie Floyd. Eddie recently performed at The White House and of course he played his monster soul hit, “Knock on Wood.” And do not miss, Sir Mack Rice, the originator of “Mustang Sally.”

Visit the Blues Breakers page at 93XRT.com/Blues.

The weather is great so come on down! I like to get there early when there are plenty of seats.

On Thursdays in this space I like to go along with today’s on-air theme, “New Music Thursday.” This week I give you Canadian artist Devon Welsh, who (along with Matthew Otto) performs under the name Majical Cloudz. They’ll be appearing at this summer’s Pitchfork Music Festival and they’ve just released their second album (first for current label Matador), Impersonator.

In an interview with Pitchfork that posted last week, Devon stated that, “Before a show, I take everything out of my pockets because my phone and wallet are reminders of who I am when I’m just living my life. When I go onstage, I don’t want anything to do with that.”

Not all artists strive for escapism with their music or performances. Some artists speak in the here and now, but in the case of Devon’s music, it’s not hard to, (in the words of the title track) “lose myself if I tried it.”

Summertime + Chicago = street fests. 9 months of unpredictable weather in our great city means that we cram a year’s worth of outdoor events into 3 months where the only threat is violent thunderstorms. This weekend you can combine one of the greatest foods known to humankind with some quality tunes in Northcenter, the home of the blues throws a giant party in its front yard, and a dance-punk band from Northern California performs on Lake St.

On to the picks…

30th Annual Chicago Blues Festival @ Grant Park & Millennium Park, Thu-Sun, June 6-9

The home of the blues throws a big party for our friends around the world every June and when it happens this year for the 30th time, Irma Thomas, Bobby Rush, Otis Clay, Shemekia Copeland, James Cotton, Billy Branch and Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater will be some of the headlining entertainment. It’s free, it’s fun, the setting is unmatched, and, um… There really aren’t too many reasons to stay away. More info here.

Ribfest Chicago @ Damen/Irving Park/Lincoln, Fri-Sun, June 7-9

Ribs. Unless you’re Morrissey, you probably feel like they’re the coolest food in the known world, so why not have a festival that celebrates gnawing meat off of a bone while taking in band after band on multiple stages and drinking beer in the middle of Lincoln Ave? Chicago favorites California Wives and Mucca Pazza are on the bill alongside southern men Jason Isbell and Bobby Bare Jr., and make some time for one of Scotland’s finest bands when they close out the festivities on Sunday night, We Were Promised Jetpacks. More info here.

!!! @ Bottom Lounge, Saturday, June 8

It’s a dance-punk party on Saturday night with a band out of Northern California that just released studio album #5, Thr!!!er. Just listen to something like “Hello? Is This Thing On” (below) and tell me what’s wrong with that song. “Nothing at all” would the correct answer. A sound rooted in post-punk and disco has the ability to make you feel like singing, dancing, or (for the groove-challenged like the author of this piece) just rocking out, and not many bands do it better than these guys. Tickets here.

The Rolling Stones have a lot of history. They were one of the original British invasion bands and the only one that survives and flourishes relatively intact. When your past and reputation precede you, it sets the table and opens doors, but it can also be a burden. Last night, at their third and final sold out show at the United Center (Keith said he felt like a local), there were highs and lows.

The show opened with a video montage of comments from celebs like Cate Blanchett, who was pissed off about their eternal skinnyness and Iggy Pop, who said when Charlie Watts hits the drums was it’s like being slapped with a dead mackerel. The lighting and sound were top notch even from my vantage point under the Glen Hall banner and there were moving video pieces celebrating their fans over the decades and a murderers row of American music legends on display during “Live With Me.” (Most of whom the Stones have long since surpassed.) Mick was in fine form as usual, prancing around looking like a self-parody until you realize he was one of the inventors of those moves. He thanked the crowd for coming out to see them since the 60s, chatted up the Blackhawks for some cheap applause and pirouetted around with guest star Taylor Swift who played Marianne Faithful on “As Tears Go By.”

Mr. Watts hit his spare Gretsch drum kit like a cannon, proving once again that he is the prototypical rock and roll drummer. Keith Richards shined on “You Got The Silver”, but struggled with his lead guitar assignments, including a technical glitch that eliminated his solo on “Honky Tonk Women.” Ron Wood picked up some of the slack and provided some good-natured energy. Mick Taylor, the former Stone and virtuoso axe man cooked on “Sway”, one of the night’s highlights (the social media request tune) but didn’t quite mesh on the other numbers. A choir from Roosevelt University sang on “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and the crowd went home after everyone took a bow with “Satisfaction” ringing in their ears. Not the transcendent experience that the Stones can often supply, but good enough. There was a feeling of finality as we headed into the parking lots, but we’ve felt that way before.

If it was the last time, I’m glad I was there. We will never see their like again.

Here comes the 16th annual Blues Breakers Blues Fest Broadcast. This is an action-packed 90 minutes of some of the best blues around! Live! From Buddy Guy’s Legends. It’s from 6:00pm to 7:30pm on Wednesday, June 5. Yes, once again on the day before the Chicago Blues Festival, 93XRT, official radio station of Blues Fest, kicks off the big event with a free broadcast that you’re all invited to attend. (Must be at least 21, space is limited, first come, first served.)

Shemekia, crowned Queen of the Blues, with her biggest fan.

Last year Buddy was out of town and so it was one of the rare times that he wasn’t part of our broadcast. This year he’ll be there. Buddy will be my co-host and he’ll perform at least a couple of songs, and maybe talk a bit about playing for President Obama and with The Rolling Stones. Last year, in Buddy’s absence, Shemekia Copeland took over the role as co-host. She was so good at that I was a little nervous about my job. Man, that was fun. This year she asked if she could come back with her own band and do some of her own songs. Hell yeah! We hope to hear something from her recent Grammy nominated album, 33 1/3. (Don’t miss Shemekia on the stage of the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park the following evening, Thursday, June 6, the opening night of the Blues Festival.) Also performing will be The Kinsey Report. Donald, Kenny and Ralph Kinsey grew up in a blues family led by their father Big Daddy Kinsey. It’s easy to tell that these guys have been playing the blues all their lives, and playing it together. Donald is really one of the best blues guitar players and band leaders anywhere, ever. Plus, he played for years with Bob Marley and has played with Albert King and other blues legends. They’re joined by another excellent guitar player, Nic Byrd, also from the NW Indiana region.

I’m so excited, I just can’t wait. I hope you can make it by or listen live on XRT. The timing of the show is such that a lot of people will be able to hear it during the evening rush hour, and, I hope, a lot of people will be able to come by and join us live after work.

While the wrath of the weather gods swirled outside the United Center, The Rolling Stones were taking their usual sweet time getting to the stage. Near 9pm the lights dimmed and a video began with an aging British stoner talking about the influence of the Rolling Stones. The video featured both fans and celebs trying to crystallize The Rolling Stones experience. And then it started.
Mick, Keith, Ronnie, Charlie and Chicago’s own Darryl Jones walked out on a sparse stage. “Get Off My Cloud.”

Like a prize-fighter assessing an opponent, The Stones seemed to be feeling out the room. You charge 250 dollars for 300 level tickets you better be ready to pack a punch.
It’s Only Rock and Roll. Paint It Black. And then the song that is so much more than a song. A landmark. A touchstone. A milepost. A song some have called the greatest song ever recorded.
Gimme Shelter.

Money no longer an issue.

We were treated to longtime back-up singer Lisa Fischer nailing the Merry Clayton role. “It’s just a shot away, shot away, shot away.”
Our first Exile track brought out Stones sax stalwart Bobby Keys and the more recent Stones reedman Tim Ries. “Rocks Off.”

The surprise guest of the evening surprised us by not being Buddy Guy, but Taj Mahal, an old friend and collaborator, who played a Taj classic, “Six Days on the Road.”
The Stones went new songs back to back and then “Honky Tonk Women,” prepared us for lift off.

Mick took a break which allowed Keith and Ronnie to come up front to do two numbers for the diehards. An acoustic “You Got The Silver” from Let It Bleed and the gritty and poignant “Before They Make Me Run.” Keith Richards in all his glory.

Without any fanfare another guitarist joined the band as Jagger sucked in a blues harp. This was the return of the prodigal Stone, Mick Taylor, who once boasted he was the only man to leave The Rolling Stones and live. The band tore into a murderous rendition of Midnight Rambler to showcase the best lead guitarist The Rolling Stones ever had.
Two top 40 crowd pleasers, “Miss You” and “Start Me Up” kept the show rolling before they decided to go all ‘best rock and roll band in the world’ on us.
Tumbling Dice, Brown Sugar, and Sympathy For The Devil.

If you have a problem with that triplet, we’re done talking.

“Sympathy” was augmented by a recorded rhythm track and an entire audience singing “Hoo Hoo.”
Encore.

Both sides of the stage fill up with The Roosevelt University Conservatory Chorus. The hand is tipped and they fill up the U.C. with the opening of “You Can’t Aways Get What You Want.” French horn fill is perfect. Crowd sing along is initially tentative and then full-throated.

“Jumping Jack Flash” took me back to Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out.

“Satisfaction” allowed Keith to stroll the rim of the tongue for a solo. Mick Taylor’s returned and sat down in front of the drums playing guitar like he was at a campfire. And Jagger? The guy’s been singing and dancing for 2 and half hours. You and I would have been hospitalized after the first 15 minutes.
I really thought their last tour would be my last chance to see The Glimmer Twins. I’m so glad it wasn’t.

“50 & Counting….” They’re here. The Stones are in town for three shows at United Center and even though most people would like to go see one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands of all time, not all can shell out the dough for tickets. Either way, the shows are a big event that you can still get into, so they’re one of this weekend’s selections along with one of Chicago’s best street fests and a guy named George playing at Metro. On to the picks…

The Rolling Stones @ United Center, Friday and Monday, May 31 and June 3

Taj Mahal joined the band as a special guest at the first of three shows last night (Tuesday) adding himself to an ever growing list of famous names that have joined the band on stage for “50 and Counting.” Tom Waits, Katy Perry, and Dave Grohl have already appeared, so who will we get on Friday and/or Monday? There are no guarantees of high-profile collaborators, but it’s something to keep an eye on. Tickets here.

Do Division Street Fest, Friday-Sunday, May 31-June 2

One of Chicago’s best street fests hits us early. With Memorial Day as the unofficial start of summer, Do Division hits us the week following with some damn fine musical entertainment. Some of the names you might know are Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, JEFF The Brotherhood, and INC., but if for some reason you can only make time for one band at the three day fest, you can’t go wrong with Chicago’s Disappears. There’s a sidewalk sale and a family fun fest as well, so bring the whole family and make sure they’re exposed to the stage antics of Ariel Pink. More info here.

Twin Shadow @ Metro, Saturday, June 1

The man born George Lewis Jr. takes the stage at Metro this Saturday evening to entertain us as part of his “True Story Tour.” According to Metro’s site, the last two tours have had a theme and this one will be no different with George or his father telling a different true story on every night of the twenty-four date tour. Read more about the tour’s theme here, and score tickets for the show here.

Memorial Day weekend is almost upon us and while some people you know might be getting out of town this weekend and heading off to their cabins and/or a lake of some kind, many of us will be holding down the fort here in Chicago. If you’re one of the folks that will be sticking around, you won’t be short on entertainment this weekend. This weekend’s concert picks include a band from the great city of Royal Oak, MI, one of Chicago’s most exciting live bands, and a DJ/producer from Barcelona entertaining at one of the best sounding rooms in all of Chicago. Let’s get to the picks, shall we?

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. @ Lincoln Hall, Friday, May 24

Are these guys Red Wings fans? They come from just outside of Detroit, so that’s a possibility, but you shouldn’t let an NHL playoff series between two original six rivals come between you and good tunes. They stop by Lincoln Hall on Friday night for an XRT Big Beat Show. Tickets here.

JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound @ Mayne Stage, Saturday, May 25

Easily, one of Chicago’s most exciting bands. This show will be taking place at Mayne Stage, and if you haven’t yet been there yourself, you’ve probably heard nothing but good things about this room and are dying to check it out. No better reason to get up there than JCBTUS. Not only is it a JCBTUS show, it’s a JCBTUS CD release show for their album, “Howl.” Tickets here.

John Talabot @ Lincoln Hall, Sunday, May 26

In this DJ’s opinion, John Talabot was responsible for one of the best albums of 2012, ƒIN. John is a Spanish DJ/producer and if you’d like to hear his work, which many consider to be the finest electronic music produced in the past few years, it will be on display at Lincoln Hall this Sunday evening. Tickets here.

What are you doing in April? I know we’re in May and that question sounds a bit odd at this point in time, but apparently it’s never too early to make some plans for a rock ‘n’ roll road trip. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will take place over two weekends again in 2014, April 11-13 and April 18-20. Having lived on the west coast until 2006, I can say that Coachella really is one of the most pleasant festival experiences in all of these United States. The festival grounds are on the Empire Polo Club fields, so you’re walking around on a nicely trimmed lawn all day long and the weather couldn’t be better at that time of year in the California desert (most of the time). Camping is a pretty painless experience but if you want to live it up a little, you rent a house with some friends and lounge around by the pool in the mornings and late evenings. We have plenty of major festivals right here in this lovely town of ours but in my opinion, if there’s one festival to travel to, Coachella would be it.

Oh, and the concert promoters have given us next year’s dates for a good reason. Tickets for 2014 go on sale this Friday. Click here for more.

He album, Harmony was released in Canada last November and is finally making a U.S. debut later this month. You're heard her award-winning song, “Stompa” rockin’ on XRT and the groovy track already has over 700,000 views on YouTube. Sporting a Flying V Guitar, Serena told us she got the guitar specifically for the new record, and she wanted “Stompa” to have a T-Rex sound, but it ended up having a T-Rex meets Ella Fitzgerald sound instead.

Yeah! How’s that warm air feeling on your skin? We’ve had quite the chilly spring so far in Chicago, but with the current warm-up we’re experiencing, spring fever should be in full effect this weekend. If you’re looking for something to do, you’ve come to the right place. This weekend we have rock ‘n’ rollers from the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area taking over The Vic, a man that fell off of the map for several years entertains on the south side, and real, actual food returns to the neighborhoods of Chicago and the suburbs. Read on!

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club @ The Vic, Friday, May 17

Peter Hayes spent some time with The Brian Jonestown Massacre back in the ’90s, but that gig wasn’t destined to last forever, so he left and formed BRMC. Their debut was released in 2001 and was loaded with gems such as “Whatever Happened to My Rock ‘n’ Roll (Punk Song),” “Spread Your Love,” and “Love Burns.” They’re now on album #7, Specter At The Feast, and will entertain this Friday night at The Vic with Dhani Harrrison’s band, Thenewno2, as openers. Tickets here.

Rodriguez @ Arie Crown Theater, Friday, May 17

Sixto Díaz Rodríguez is the subject of the Academy Award winning documentary, Searching For Sugar Man, and last I checked, a few seats remain for his Friday night show at Arie Crown. The film has revived his career and turned thousands of people on to his music, so if you’d like to see the man that was way under the radar for decades, I wouldn’t wait around too long to snatch up a few tickets. You can find those here.

Your Local Farmers Market

We’re now into the middle of May and if your local farmers market hasn’t re-opened, it will be in the next couple of weeks. With all we’re learning about trans fats, processed foods, Monsanto, the obesity epidemic, heart disease, diabetes, etc., it becomes more and more apparent that the best place to buy real, actual, honest food is at your local farmers market. Oh, and staying local is always nice. Do your apples really need to be shipped from New Zealand? That’s quite a carbon footprint for an apple, innit? The moral of the story is to eat more food that grows, and if it can be grown locally, we all win. A list of Chicago markets can be found <a href="//www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyE9vFGKogs&w=640&h=360] Your Local Farmers Market We're now into the middle of May and if your local farmers market hasn't re-opened, it will be in the next couple of weeks.

Hearing Kurt Vile’s guitar paints a vivid picture of exactly how talented he is, but seeing him dance around his fretboard with ease is just mesmerizing.

Kurt Vile returned to Chicago for a sold out XRT Big Beat Show at Lincoln Hall on Tuesday. Backed by his band “The Violators”, Vile and the Violators pushed each note to the far reaches of the sonic threshold during the 14 song set that drew heavily from Vile’s most recent album Wakin On A Pretty Daze, with supplemental selections from Vile’s discography.

Opening with the album’s 9 minute title track, Vile quickly turned the audience into a sea of bobbing heads and grins, a state the audience remained in throughout the show. Vile’s slacker vocals carried his candid lyrics over incredibly proficient guitar arrangements. Whether he was strumming, slamming, or finger picking, Vile revealed that the potential of 6 or at times 12 strings is near limitless.

“Girl Named Alex” and “Hunchback” featured more impressive dynamics that can be found in Vile’s music in the form of psychedelic keyboard beds and a saxophone solo that placed “Hunchback” into a frenzy. Vile drew from early releases for his stripped down encore that featured “Baby’s Arms” from Smoke Ring For My Halo and 2009 single “He’s Alright”

The band’s stage presence reflected a light-hearted group of musicians who seem to be exactly where they hoped to be when they first picked up their instruments. Chatter was kept to a minimum throughout the show, but when Vile bid farewell, he made sure his well wishes extended past the evening. “Thank You and Have A Nice Life” he announced as he left the stage.

Hear how Kurt Vile opened his Lincoln Hall show with a free download of “Waking On A Pretty Daze” and check out Kurt Vile’s visit to the XRT Studio.

It’s warm outside. You feel a strong case of spring fever coming on, but the weekend is still out of reach. What to do? Luckily, you live in the third largest metropolitan area in the United States, so finding s*** to do should never be a problem. My recommendation? Go to Metro tomorrow night (Wed, May 15) to see Youth Lagoon.

Trevor Powers (the man behind Youth Lagoon) just released his second album, Wondrous Bughouse. One of the strongest releases of 2013 so far, Trevor creates music that some would find reminiscent of early Pink Floyd and when he says that he’s “becoming more fascinated with the human psyche and where the spiritual meets the physical world,” you know you’re going on a ride, you just have no idea where it will take you.

Trevor performs at Metro on Wednesday night and as of the time of this writing, the show is not yet sold out, so give him a look. It’s a great excuse to get out of the house on what should be a warm, lovely Wednesday evening.
