“Stompa” was the third and final song she played for us in studio, and the groovy track already has over 700,000 views on YouTube. Sporting a Flying V Guitar, Serena told us she got the guitar specifically for the new record, and she wanted “Stompa” to have a T-Rex sound, but it ended up having a T-Rex meets Ella Fitzgerald sound instead.

With almost and Adele-like voice, she also belted out the songs, “Mary Go Round” and “What I Wouldn’t Do”. You can check out all three tracks she performed in studio below.

“Radio and the size of an audience for rock radio has sort of traded its superiority to other formats. A lot of kids listen to music on Youtube, listening on a laptop or on their ear-buds, and they just keep clicking over to hear the song, and they get used to that insanely inferior audio,” said Cornell. However, the Seattle-band says that didn’t affect the way they recorded the new album. “We ignored it, we sequenced the album based on the idea that it’s an hour long experience from beginning to end. There is always the foreboding notion that people won’t sit and listen to a full album anymore, but that’s what we do,” Cornell said.

However, a positive difference they found with their return was the increase of independent control they had while making the new record. They were able to write and record King Animal without being signed to a label, which essentially allowed the band to experience the freedom that had fertilized their chemistry during the early days of Soundgarden. According to the band, this was a good change, because they saw more individuals of the music industry getting involved in their affairs and ultimately making decisions for the band. Unfortunately that was not what bands from the grunge scene wanted. “Do it it yourself and think for your self, doing it the way you want to do it, not the L.A. version of it”, said Ben Shepherd.

The leader of the Nicholas Tremulis Orchestra has a lot to celebrate right now. The Nicholas Tremulis Orchestra is celebrating not only their 25th anniversary but also the release of their new album For The Baby Doll. “It’s our best record” Tremulis announced to XRT listeners with confidence, “We tried to take everything on this album to its forgone conclusion.”

Tremulis has always been an extremely candid songwriter, sharing the  intimate details of his life in his lyrics, details that others may never utter in public.  “I’m not scared to write songs” he explained, ” The one thing I realize in writing a song is you can’t write with shame, you have to write shamelessly and be honest.”

Music and lyrics weren’t the only thing he wrote for the new album. The release also comes with a 36 page book that features a  memoir that reads just as well as his lyrics. Tremulis opens the piece with an incredibly appropriate proclamation, “When I was 4, I wanted to be music. Not play it, be it.”

To celebrate the release of For The Baby Doll, Nicholas Tremulis Orchestra will be playing an XRT show at the Chicago Winery on April 30th. The show begins at 8PM.

Born in Elk Grove Village, the singer says that fans of the Smashing Pumpkins should expect new music in the future. “We’re back in the studio, and we’re talking about doing two records simultaneously,” Corgan said. He also mentioned the band will be celebrating an exciting milestone, “It’s going to be the 25th anniversary of the Smashing Pumpkins, and we might play at the Metro to celebrate.” One place you won’t see the band at this year is at Lollapalooza, and the forty-six-year-old says they are “still waiting for an invite.” Watch Billy and Terri’s conversation below.

Calling in from his post at Lollapalooza Brazil, Perry created the festival in 1991 as a farewell extravaganza for his band Jane’s Addiction. After weeks of speculation, rumors, and an eventual leak of the lineup, Perry explained the frustration of not being able to officially announce the lineup first. “It’s a pain in the butt, it’s like you want to ask someone to marry you and your friend jumps in and says ‘hey he’s going to ask you to marry him’, you don’t want to hear it from that person,” he said.

Perry also discussed some of the bands playing this year at the three-day-festival like The Cure, who have never played at Lollapalooza before. “Yeah everyone is super excited for The Cure, they are like a fine wine, their songs have grown graceful and better with age.” “If you would have told me in the early 90′s that New Order and The Cure would both be playing, I would freak out,” Perry said. The Brooklyn native was also excited to have the French band Phoenix return to the festival after headlining in 2010. “Yeah, they have a good happy vibe, and the sound altogether equals a good time and a party, and Lollapalooza to me is a party that you don’t want to miss.”

Three-day-passes have sold out, but you can buy single-day-tickets tomorrow when they go on sale at 10 a.m. Central on the official website. However, the living members of Mad Season released a box set today to honor Staley and Saunders. It features a remastered version of Above, a DVD featuring a concert from 1995, and a disc featuring many unreleased tracks. Among the unreleased tracks are three songs that were written for the second album that was never made, and Mark Lanegan of the Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age, filled in on vocals for the late Staley.

There were also a series of four podcasts recorded chronicling the band’s history and the box set. It features present-day interviews with McCready and Martin, and also an interview featuring Staley before he died. You can listen to part one of this interesting supergroup story below.

As for McCready’s other little band Pearl Jam, they apparently are working on an “experimental” album right now.

If you haven’t already heard, the cover art for this upcoming album is an actual mural featured right in Philadelphia. Street artist, Steve Powers, explains that the mural is in the styled after similar beautiful, simple signs painted in the building’s industrial Philly neighborhood. Powers explains that, “for all intents and purposes, that’s our industry now. Music and art [are] two of the most powerful industries that we have here.”

“It’s me,” Vile says of Wakin on a Pretty Daze, “you turn it on and it sounds like me. But the guitar playing is better and the ideas are new. It’s classic, it’s epic, with many more solos.”

Vile has released two singles as a teaser for Wakin on a Pretty Daze “Never Run Away” and “Wakin On A Pretty Day”.

The video for “Wakin On A Pretty Day” is less of a music video, and more of a documentary of footage taken from the mural for the album’s cover.

“We were just on a week-long radio tour and we were driving in the snow into Chicago, and all of a sudden this minute-long commercial that featured five or six of our songs came on talking about a show we were playing,” bandmate Kanene Pipkin told Radio.com.

They pulled the van over, started screaming and did what every buzzy Brooklyn band does in such moments: They busted out a sled they had in the back and promptly started playing in the snow.

Pipkin likened the moment to the memorable “we’re on the radio!” scene in the 1996 film That Thing You Do! but it doesn’t stop there. The folk-tinged trio may have just dropped its self-titled debut in January, but they’ve already had several memorable experiences with TV appearances and opening slots for the likes of The Civil Wars and Brandi Carlile. They’ve been compared to bands like Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers, playing what they themselves characterize as “country soul.”

The Lone Bellow have come a long way from their inception. Old friends, singer Zach Williams said Elmquist was the first person who encouraged him to sing in front of an audience after dealing with a near tragedy years ago.

“My wife had this accident and fell off a horse and was diagnosed a quadriplegic,” Williams explained. “In my journal entries I would write in rhyme to help me process information.”

Williams lived in the hospital waiting for his wife to recover, and it was during this time that Pipkin’s brother urged him to turn his pain into music.

“Her older brother and some other good friends were like, ‘Man, you should learn how to play the guitar and sing at the same time and turn these into songs. Play the open mic to process the emotion,’” Williams said. “I started doing that and that’s where I stepped into the music world.”

He and a group of friends living in the hospital decided that when his wife recovered, they would all move to New York together.

“Miraculously, my wife was healed,” he said. “Two years later we all move up to New York City together. That was seven years ago.”

While many of the stories within their songs tend to be more melancholy (as you’d expect they would be, having sparked from Williams’ lowest moment), their harmonies manage to lighten the mood.

“There’s something cathartic about singing really sad songs, but singing them in three-part harmony because it’s not as isolating as one guy crying into his microphone: ‘I’m so lonely.’ You can only be so lonely when there are two people singing harmony around you,” Pipkin said. “It’s a way to hide that really sad sentiment into something that almost tricks you. ‘Oh, this is a fun song’ and then it lets you ease into what the song is about instead of beating it over someone’s head, ‘These are my feelings!’”

Current single “You Never Need Nobody” is already in rotation on radio stations throughout the country, including Chicago’s XRT. Marty Lennartz, a DJ and Creative Assistant to Programming at the station, said their song is in regular rotation and with good reason.

“They’re an up-and-coming band that has a lot of potential,” Lennartz explained. “They fit in really well in the genre of music that right now seems to be connecting with tons of people. When you look back on 2012/2013, that folk approach and playing organic instruments and songwriting is going to be the music of the time.”

A band of friends, each member – Zach Williams, Kanene Pipkin and Brian Elmquist – takes part in both the songwriting and vocal duties. Songs like “Two Sides of Lonely” are difficult for the band to play, but they get through it together.

“Sometimes voices come along that for some reason match yours perfectly. It’s rare,” Pipkin added. “We’re friends first so there is that level of honesty and trust to where we can say things are good or say things need to be changed.”

As excited as they were to hear their songs on the radio, The Lone Bellow said nothing can top going to a concert and having their lyrics sung back to them.

“We went to Chicago, played our first show there and they had been playing our song on the radio [XRT],” Elmquist said. “The whole crowd was carrying our chorus the first ever time we played in Chicago. That was one of the coolest things.”
