THE BIG BEAT Song of the Week: LCD Soundsystem – ‘call the police’

If you’re familiar with their catalog, you know that they’re batting 1.000. Three albums, three complete gems, and if their first original, non-Christmas material in seven years is any indication of what’s to come, it looks like their hitting streak, er, home-run streak will continue. “call the police” is seven minutes of LCD magic. Sometimes, when a band you love goes away for a while and then returns with new music for the first time in forever, there can be a tendency to overrate the material, to talk yourself into it. You really want to like it, so you give it every benefit of the doubt even though in reality it’s quite mediocre. It feels good to not have to worry about that scenario with Mr. Murphy and Co. this time out. This song is an absolute pleasure to spin on the radio and be prepared to be hearing it much more throughout the summer. Welcome back, LCD. You make us very happy.
