Kind of a mellower affair last night than some of the jumped up crazy tunes Dante Carfagna has brought by for us on the previous ten chapters of our ongoing History of Chicago Funk and Soul. I would credit that to the superb and sophisticated songwriting of Curtis Mayfield, the man who penned all of last night’s songs. Curtis was prolific by anybody’s songwriting standards. He was a staff writer for Okeh (among others) all the while writing tunes for his own Impressions (among others). I really had no idea HOW MANY songs he wrote until I got a copy of the just published biography written by his son, Todd Mayfield. As I mentioned last night, Dante will be jointly interviewing Todd with me for an upcoming Anesthetic. Expect that to air some time early next year. Dante Carfagna, however, to nobody’s surprised, is well steeped in the work of Curtis along with so many other performers and writers out Chicago, both the legendary and the long forgotten.
