This year for the XRT Listener Poll we’re shaking things up a tiny bit, voting week by week instead of all at once. Here’s the voting schedule:
Best Music Venue Voting Starts 11/21
Rookie of the Year Voting Starts 11/28
Best Song Voting Starts 12/5
Best Concert Voting Starts 12/12
Best Album Voting Starts 12/19
And Best Local Artist Voting is open now! In the past for our Best Local Artist Ballot we’ve focused on the long term local music scene, but this year we’re looking more at 2016 specifically. The current music scene in Chicago is pretty remarkable. Take a second to cast your vote and maybe take a few names from the list you haven’t yet heard of to check out too.
Our current music scene wouldn’t be as cool as it is right now without these legendary figures laying the ground work. So here are the Top 5 Local Artists from the 2015 XRT Listener Poll.
5. Mavis Staples
From her start with her family band The Staples Singers, to her many collaborations with all kinds of artists, to her solo career, Mavis is the real deal. She’s even performing for us at the XRT / Goose Island Big Holiday Concert coming up December 7th at the Chicago Theatre!
“Can You Get To That” – Mavis Staples
4. Poi Dog Pondering
Although they began in Hawaii and had a stint in Austin, Texas, they call Chicago home and we’re happy to have them.
“God’s Gallipoli” – Poi Dog Pondering
3. Cheap Trick
The Pride and Joy of Rockford, Illinois. Not technically Chicago but this land is my land, this land is your land. And so on.
“Mandocello” – Cheap Trick
2. Buddy Guy
Buddy turned 80 years young this summer and celebrated with a big bash at his Blues Club in the South Loop. Although if you ask him how old he is he might tell you 74.
“74 Years Young” – Buddy Guy
The prominent indie rock group has been making noise for over 20 years now, and Chicago has been proud to claim them. They’re coming back for the Wilco Winterlude, and their first time ever playing The Chicago Theatre on February 22nd, 23rd, and 25th, 2017.
“Via Chicago” – Wilco
