A pitchers duel that lived up to the hype followed the XRT Morning Show’s broadcast Friday from the Wrigley Field radio booth. Cueto versus Lester was one for the ages, with neither pitcher yielding much of anything until Javy Baez managed to coax a home run into the left field basket in the 8th inning. That was all the scoring the Cubs would need as they sent in shut-down closer Aroldis Chapman… or was it? Giants catcher Buster Posey hit a two-out monster double that might’ve gone out had the wind cooperated. But Chapman nailed down the save to cap off the first meaningful game the Cubs had played in weeks.
Saturday night saw Jeff Samardzija return to Chicago to face this year’s Cub Cy Young candidate, Kyle Hendricks, after stints on both sides of town. This one didn’t have quite the tension of game 1, as the Cubs got to Shark early & often, staking Hendricks to a 4-0 lead against a Giants team not known for its offensive prowess. They still managed to make a game of it after Hendricks went out of the game following a scary comebacker that hit him in the forearm. X-rays came back negative, so he should be ready for his next start, possibly in the NLCS, depending upon tonight’s outcome in San Francisco.
