It was a wailing end to the night.

Prophets of Rage aren’t only about political songs. When it comes to their lives shows, they know how to put on a good time that celebrates everything visceral about rock music.

While playing a show in Nashville on Tuesday evening (September 27), Prophets of Rage invited up two guests to help them perform protopunk band MC5’s “Kick Out the Jams.” Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Cage the Elephant’s lead singer Matt Shultz joined the supergroup for a wailing rendition of the already high-energy song.

Shultz took over vocals for the cover and spent the song practically jumping from one end of the stage to the other, his voice reaching for the strained screech that exists on the original version. Shortly after the two minute mark (in the video below), Auerbach began a wailing guitar solo and “battled” Morello in a back-and-forth battle that left the crowd howling.

It’s not the first time Prophets of Rage has covered MC5’s song. When they performed it in Los Angeles and Toronto, they brought Dave Grohl onstage to guest.

Watch Auerbach and Shultz do their thing below.
