Twenty One Pilots Cover My Chemical Romance’s ‘Cancer’

By Amanda Wicks

My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade celebrates its 10th anniversary on October 23, and a series of alternative rock bands are paying homage by covering songs off the album for Rock Sound Presents: The Black Parade. One of the more anticipated tracks from that project is Twenty One Pilots’ cover of “Cancer.” Today (September 14), they released a lyric video for their rendition.

The lyric video blends an animated style with a more narrative visual approach. Viewers are placed in a first person POV as the camera wanders through an empty house, stopping in front of a chess board and coming across a bookcase. As the books fly forth, they open page by page to a different lyric.

Colored in black and white with a hot pink accent, the cool video reflects the synth-influenced cover Twenty One Pilots did. The song’s melancholy tone and somber melody comes across in ever greater detail as a result.

The cover of “Cancer” appears on Rock Sound‘s special magazine and CD tribute to My Chemical Romance, which is now available.
