We’ve just heard great news for fans of The Shins, which includes all of us here at XRT.
Founder and pretty much only full time member, James Mercer, announced on Portland’s KBOO 90.7 that The Shins have finished work on their fifth full length album.
It will be the first record from The Shins since 2012’s “Port Of Morrow” and you have to go back to 2007 for the previous record “Wincing The Night Away”. In between Mercer has kept busy with his Danger Mouse collaboration, Broken Bells for two albums and tours.
Mercer produced the new record himself and says it’s more like the first three Shins albums than Port of Morrow using the palette he’s used historically for the band.
“I think we’ve got something that Shins fans will really love and I think there’s some things on there that are different enough. I think it’s really strong. I think lyrically, I’m better than I ever was. And I think my songwriting is stronger than it ever was.”
Mercer says the album is yet to be untiled but hopefully it will be released in January of 2017.
