The rain stayed away for the first time and the sun was out with a nice breeze off the lake. The dragonflies were back and buzzed over a number of fine performances including an early set from the Strumbellas, who sang about heaven and the sun and guns in our heads with gorgeous harmonies and infectious good will.
Dua Lipa and Chairlift were the perfect voices for background noshing in the shaded part of the Lounge, but the epic performance of the afternoon belonged to The Joy Formidable. Led by Ritzy Bryan, who looks a little like Olivia Newton John from the sixties but plays guitar in the Billy Corgan style, they blasted modern power trio rock that was some of the best sound in Grant Park this weekend. They ended by smashing their instruments and walking off stage to a long burst of feedback.
My schedule demanded an early exit, but I walked out to the sound of Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats playing “I Need Never Get Old” to a pulsating group in front of the Petrillo Music Shell. I felt young(er) all the way home.
