At Just 20 Years Old, Sunflower Bean Has Been in the Game ‘A Little Too Long’

Some of New York’s youngest rockers Nick Kivlen, Jacob Faber and Julia Cumming of Sunflower Bean join Jason Thomas Live from Lollapalooza backstage in Artist Village.

After Jason recently caught the their performance at Schuba’s, he wondered where this 20 year old trio from Brooklyn gained their veteran stage presence. “We’ve all been in the game a little too long,” Kivlen says.

“Through practice and playing so many shows we understand each other on stage so we can lean on each other and do a lot of improvisation,” adds Cumming.

Not too far out of high school themselves, the three also agree that rock and roll is not as popular as it should be among millennials. “Yeah, it was probably the most uncool thing to do…to like rock music,” says Kivlen. “People might know Nirvana because they saw it on a t-shirt at H & M or the Eagles with Hotel California, because their parents listened to it, adds Cumming.

So who can we thank for influencing Sunflower Bean’s album Human Ceremony? Faber recalls, “For me, when my Dad showed me The Who Live at Leeds at a young age, I was like ‘YEAH, that is some heavy stuff…especially for a drummer.”
