Kurt Vile Reveals How A Potential Pop Jam Became His Best Known Hit

Earlier today Kurt Vile stopped by XRT’s  BlueCross BlueShield stage, where he performed three songs off his latest record – a brief sample of his set to come later this evening at Lollapalooza. In between both performances, Vile stopped by to discuss his latest record and the energy of his live shows with Marty Lennartz.

“Always enjoy our time together,” the soft-spoken Vile told Lennartz before talking about his acoustically driven latest B’lieve I’m Going Down. Lennartz noted that Vile seems to record at a bunch of different studios with a bunch of different people, to which he said, “I feel like a lot of the people I play with, they’re sprawled out, so I just go to their environments, and I get to vacation and they don’t.” The album came full circle with the help of Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliot Smith), who took the hit “Pretty Pimpin” – a song Vile said “had potential to be a pop jam”- to the next level.

And as for the band’s live shows, Vile said “The songs that seem kind of simple, they’re deceptively tough to play live,” though once he gets up there with The Violators,”We just rock up the songs, everything is just a little louder.”
