Alright everybody, in off the ledge! The Cubs took 2 of 3 from the Mets in what Joe Maddon refers to as “Meatloaf series”. It was an especially gratifying series because the Cubs had been struggling against the Mets & Jake Arrieta hadn’t looked good of late. He made an excellent start that he unfortunately lost, but that’s on the offense for not scoring runs. The Cubs have also started trying to put the final touches on the roster as the trade deadline approaches, trading off hard-hitting prospect Dan Vogelbach for pitcher Mike Montgomery. Dexter Fowler and Joe Nathan should be coming off the DL soon, so room will have to be made. Ahead of next week’s crosstown series, the Cubs are 90 miles north in Milwaukee to resume divisional play. Jason Hammel is making the start Friday, so he’s probably chomping on his potato chips to avoid cramping. Here’s hoping that Maddon gets to enjoy some of those chips as a side to another Meatloaf series. Two out of three ain’t bad.
