Whitney’s Light Upon the Lake is my favorite Chicago release of the year, hands down. Plenty of days and months left in 2016, it’s true, and something and someone may come along to eclipse Light but, for now, these ten tracks totaling 30 minutes of music are the soundtrack of my summer. Band founders guitarist Max Kakacek and singing drummer Julien Ehrlich (both ex-Smith Westerns) will join me this Sunday night at 7:30 on Local Anesthetic to talk primarily about the songs on Light. Specifically, the composing and arranging process. The old “less is more” is difficult to pull off when you’ve got six musicians to work in to the mix but this is not a claustrophobic record by any means. I’m also curious as to how Max and Julien are holding up under the work load of gigs and promotion. They’ve already been on the road extensively this year with a boatload of dates to come (including a just announced Dec. 3 show at Thalia). You know how I worry. I’m Richard Milne. Please join me for lots of music what should be an enlightening and fun conversation with Whitney on Local Anesthetic this Sunday night at 7:30 here on XRT.
