My absolute favorite thing to do at Lolla is go right when the festival opens and wander around from stage to stage deliberately watching musicians I have never heard of or seen demonstrate why they deserve to be there.
They’ve got a limited time to strut and fret before an audience that still has a measure of sobriety and a critical eye and ear so the pressure is on, and they have to give it everything they’ve got. Sometimes, it’s not enough and they disappear from the radar for good, but just making it to a stage in Grant Park is, at least for a bright shining moment, a career and life highlight.
So come for the Radioheads and Red Hot Chilis, but whet your palate with the unknown. There are plenty to chose from and sometimes, there be dragons. (Internet searches are cheating, btw.)
