Soccer superstar Lionel Messi was sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud. Whether or not he’ll actually serve the term is one thing, but he’s far from the first major celebrity to be handed jail time.
Let’s take a look at five musicians that have been arrested at some point in their careers.
5.) Paul McCartney
Imagine this, Paul McCartney being unable to perform music for seven years for carrying pot. That almost happened back in 2001 when McCartney was arrested in a Japanese airport for possession of marijuana.
McCartney gave an inside look into his time in jail in a phenomenal 2001 piece for The Daily Mail. You can read it here.
4.) Tom Morello
Morello is well known for his political advocacy. Back in 2006, Morello was arrested alongside 400 protestors in Los Angeles. Protesting for immigrant hotel workers’ rights, Morello and company ended up spending the night in jail. He told MTV News, “spirits were higher. We had a rousing civil rights-era-like hootenanny on ’the inside.’”
3.) Kurt Cobain
Prior to his fame in Nirvana, Kurt Cobain was arrested in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. Once in 1985 for spray painting “Ain’t got no how watchamacallit” on a building and a year later for trespassing on a roof.
2.) Steve Earle
Earle was arrested in 1993 on charges of heroin possession. After serving two-months in jail, Earle checked into rehabilitation treatment and kicked his drug addiction.
1.) Jim Morrison
Morrison has a long history of run-in’s with the law. From indecent exposure, to public profanity and drunkenness, to inciting a riot, The Doors frontman has a long rap-sheet. Check out a full list of his criminal record here.
