Backstage At Bonnaroo

Jack Johnson, came to the rescue when Mumford and Sons announced they had to cancel their Saturday night, headlining performance due to bassist Ted Dwanes’ illness.

I was on my way to Bonnaroo to sit in on a set with my friends ALO last night when we got the call asking if I could possibly help out and cover for Mumford and Sons. I heard the news about Ted Dwane and was happy to know that he was on his way to recovery. I called my band and asked if they were up for it. Long story short – they are headed this way. I’ve got a lot of lyrics and chords to relearn by Saturday night. I was here to play the first Bonnaroo and it is a very special festival to my band. We are excited to hit the stage again. Get well Ted! — Aloha, Jack

Spend this weekend Backstage at Bonnaroo with XRT at the 12th Annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. Sure, there are superstar headliners: McCartney, Petty & the Heartbreakers … But during the course of the three live radio shows hosted by XRT’s Marty Lennartz, we’ll be bringing you exclusive interviews by some of the big name acts, some future big names, as well as performances scheduled to include Mumford & Sons, Of Monsters and Men, Passion Pit, Gov’t Mule, The xx, The National, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Glen Hansard, Local Natives, Divine Fits, and Calexico. Tune in 4-7pm Friday, 3-7pm Saturday, and 2-6pm Sunday.

In the player below Jack talks about his very special studio and how Jeff Tweedy and Andrew Bird inspired his solo shows.

Johnson and his band had no trouble stepping in on such short notice to perform at the festival. Having headlined at the very first Bonnaroo in 2008, the festival remains very special to them. Johnson has been busy in the studio recording a new album, From Here to Now to You, set to release September 17th. This is his first album of brand new all original songs since In the Sea (2010).

“I Got You,” maintains the breezy, chill style he is so well known for and is available now on iTunes.
