If a new writeup from rollingstone.com is any indication, the band is in no hurry to replicate their 2007 hit album, Oracular Spectacular, and really, that became quite apparent when we received “Flash Delirium,” the first single from their second album, Congratulations. Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser seem to have no interest whatsoever in creating music that is easily accessible with just one listen. “Kids,” “Electric Feel,” and “Time to Pretend” were songs like that, but the band is in a different place in 2012/2013 and as artists, you have to respect them for making music that they want to make and for not giving in to outside pressures and influences that might expect them to move further down the road they were on five or six years ago. People mature, they evolve, tastes and values change, and when listening to MGMT’s first and second albums, this is something that you pick up on right away. We really have no idea what to expect with album #3 other than the fact that the band says it’ll be out in June, it will be self-titled and according to the piece referenced earlier, it will be even “weirder” than Congratulations. Even if you weren’t as excited about Congrats as you were with Oracular, you have to respect the band for moving forward and seemingly never looking back.
