Olivia Harrison has declined the honor of having a stature of her late husband George Harrison erected not far from their home, but there will be a plaza in Spain named for Joe Strummer of the Clash. This will be in Granada where Joe spent quite a bit of time. He even heard a local band on a juke box in a bar and liked them so much he produced an album for them. On a credibility level, that’s better than winning the lottery. ”Yeah, man, Joe Strummer heard our single in some tavern on their juke box and gave us a call….really….I’m not making this up.”
This whole idea started with a facebook petition and then more than 2,000 people who actually live in Granada lent their signatures, and even some political parties got involved.
Joe name checked the town in the Clash song Spanish Bombs on the London Calling LP. ”Spanish songs in Granada, oh ma corazon.” When you visit, it’s the ideal photo op for those of us who love Joe Strummer. If this gets you yearning for Joe and you haven’t seen the documentary The Future Is Unwritten, get that DVD and watch it. Then gather your friends around a camp fire and share your Joe Strummer stories.
