The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame announced its inductees for 2013 at a press conference held at the Nokia Theater L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles today, and two legendary classic rock bands who have been eligible for years have finally been voted in: Rush and Heart. (Artists are eligible 25 years after their first release.)
Rush released their self-titled debut album in 1974, so they have been eligible since 1999. The current lineup – bassist/keyboardist/singer Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer Neil Peart – have been together since their second album, 1975’s Fly By Night when Peart replaced original drummer John Rutsey. Rutsey, who passed away in 2008, most likely won’t be inducted as a member of the band.
One band on the ballot who didn’t get voted in, which is sure to be a bone of contention with hard rock and heavy metal fans: Deep Purple. Also on the ballot but not being inducted: Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.
2013’s other Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees include legendary hip-hop group Public Enemy (making them the fourth rap act to be inducted, after Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Run-D.M.C. and The Beastie Boys), singer/songwriter Randy Newman, disco icon Donna Summer and bluesman Albert King (whose most famous song, “Born Under A Bad Sign,” was famously covered by Cream).

Heart’s lineup, however, is much more complicated. While singer Ann Wilson and guitarist Nancy Wilson have been with the band from the start, over twenty other musicians have passed through the ranks since their debut, 1976’s Dreamboat Annie. While it’s possible that only the Wilson sisters will be included, it’s likely that some other early members will be inducted with them.
Neither Rush nor Heart are likely to rest on their accolades: Rush has a European tour scheduled in 2013, in support of this year’s Clockwork Angels album. Heart, who released Fanatic in October, kick off a North American tour in January.
The 28th Annual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles, and it will air on HBO on Saturday May 18 at 9 pm ET. Tickets to attend the ceremony go on sale on January 25. For more information on tickets, go to rockhall.com.
