The “Soul Queen of New Orleans” comes up north to Chicagoland for a rare visit. When ever Irma Thomas is in our town, she will be Marker’s Weekend Live Blues Pick. And don’t just think the the “Soul Queen…” title is something I made up, it’s the title bestowed upon Irma by officials of the City of New Orleans. Her first record nearly cracked the top 20 before she was out of her teens, “You Can Have My Husband But Please Don’t Mess With My Man.” More hits followed; “Time is On My Side” and “It’s Raining.” She’s a main stage performer every year at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. This weekend she’ll be performing two shows on Friday night at S.P.A.C.E. in Evanston.
