December can get away from us. So many preparations and responsibilities that we can forget to enjoy the moment. Here are 7 different shows in 7 different venues that might have escaped your notice.
At press time, there were still tickets available for all these shows.
Leo Kottke at S.P.A.C.E. Sunday, December 2nd. He is arguably the finest steel string finger picker of our generation. He is absolutely the best storyteller. Saturday show already sold out. Leo is my chosen deity so I kinda got lost in youtube for a while, but here’s a sweet vintage performance.
Trombone Shorty at Park West on Thursday and Friday, December 6th and 7th. For Trombone Shorty, Treme is more than the name of an HBO series; it’s his original home. Aside from his New Orleans musical pedigree (Jesse Hill was his grandfather), Trombone Shorty’s music is irresistable.
of Montreal at Metro Sunday, December 9th. This is not your father’s Athens, Georgia.
Mike Doughty at City Winery Monday, December 10th. Mike’s new album, Flip Is Another Honey is a collection of other people’s songs which is fine. Just don’t make a habit of it. He’s far too fine a songwriter to rob us of his own songs. This youtube video of “His Truth Is Marching On” has 615 total views. “Gangnam Style” has over 800 Million. Do the math and get me a reservation for the first flight off this planet.
Punch Brothers at Vic Theater on Thursday December 13th. Remember my Lin’s Bin about the great banjo renaissance? No? Well, here’s exhibit B. Nickel Creek mandolin savant Chris Thile is now a Punch Brother.
Siegel-Schwall Band at Mayne Stage on Friday, December 21st. A classic line-up including bassist Rollo Radford and drummer Sam Lay, who both played with Corky and Jim back in the day.
NRBQ Christmas Show at Fitzgerald’s on Friday, December 21st. Terry Adams is the only original member of this legendary cult favorite, but he is a tour de force on the keyboard and not a little crazy. A Chicago guitarist steeped in awesomeness, Scott Ligon, has been recording and touring with NRBQ for a coupla years now.
