Perhaps the most exciting thing for record collectors (or just music fans, specifically Chicago music fans, I suppose) on last night’s show was the revelation from my guest Dante Carfagna that most of the 45′s we heard are still available. If you’re up for doing the crate digging, that is. Crate digging? That’s spending inordinate amounts of time seeking out sources of long out-of-print dusty grooves and then systematically flipping thru them all. Thousands, sometimes tens of thousands at a time. That’s the kind of gig that’s impossible to maintain unless somewhere along the line you’ve been bitten by a deep and unbridled passion for not only the sound in those groves, but the history behind each track. Who played what, where, when and why. Who made it possible. What made it possible. Every 45 rpm single ever cut has a story behind it and last night on Local Anesthetic we touched upon the story of Chicago’s Lamarr Productions. Check it out. The History of Chicago Funk and Soul (part 7) with my guest Dante Carfagna is just a click away.
