What could have become a long drawn out musical joke has coalesced into a dynamic and adventurous tour de force. What’s kept this Mucca Pazza madness on even keel is the true faith of the core contingency and the very real, exemplary chops of the whole ensemble. Whether it’s ‘bone, guitar or sousaphone, you need to know your axe and what it’s capable of because there’s no doubt at a certain point you WILL be asked to let loose with a triplet or two in a key you weren’t previously aware existed.
Over the course of three discs and countless gigs, Mucca Pazza has carved out a template for wild and wooly “marching” bands everywhere. (And, interesting to note, other mobile combos of all sorts are popping up around the country. We’ll be sure to discuss when Mucca Pazza are my guest on Anesthetic this week). Safety Fifth is Mucca’s new disc. Virtually all the tunes were composed by various band members. Styles are a myriad of things you’d expect and plenty that you wouldn’t. Fun and vivaciousness would be a common thread. That’s exactly the sprit I expect Mazza Pazza to bring to the conversation when we chat and play tunes from Safety Fifth on Local Anesthetic, Sunday at 7:30pm here on XRT
