All of the bands at Lolla are worth seeing and even if one turns out to not be your cup of tea, a short walk is all it takes to change your perspective. Nonetheless, don’t miss the following:
1. Black Sabbath, Bud Light stage, Friday. It’s NEVER a good idea to flirt with demonic symbols and motifs (that goes for you too Ouija boarders), but Ozzy and company have managed to survive more or less intact. A lot of their music is surprisingly positive and has proven to be quite influential. Health problems and a contract dispute have taken their toll, but 32 years after I saw them on the Heaven and Hell tour (with Ronnie James Dio), ¾ of the band is back for their only show of 2012. The Black Keys are a worthy substitute if people start urgently drawing pentagrams. (That never works, btw.)
2. tUnE-yArDs, Sony stage, Saturday. Merrill Garbus puts on a jaw-dropping display of musical multi-tasking with dynamic moves, incredible vocal range and a whole bunch of terrific songs. Don’t forget to cheer through your incredulity.
3. Of Monsters and Men, Google Play stage, Sunday. The only band to win a nationwide talent show (OK, it was Iceland) and one of the few to power their amps with geothermal energy. Plus, their debut is one of the best albums of the year. Drink iced coffee during their set to make them feel at home.
