Yesterday afternoon, two of Delta Spirit’s members, Matthew Velasquez and Kelly Winrich, sat down with Terri Hemmert to discuss their Californian roots, their new habitat in Brooklyn, NY, and to perform two of their most loved songs.
We heard an acoustic rendition of “California,” from their recent self-titled album. The song really captures the essence and movement of cruising through Delta Spirit’s home state of California, as Terri pointed out. The echoing harmonies and vocals in this acoustic version exhibit the perfect pairing of the band’s members. However, Matt and Kelly revealed to Terri that they were, in fact, rivals at one point. They went to rival high schools and competed against each other in a Battle of the Bands competition. Neither of them won, but regardless of who the winner was, Delta Spirit has definitely come out on top.
As Terri predicts, the winner is most likely “selling insurance now.” Eventually Matt and Kelly put their high school rivalry aside to join forces, creating Delta Spirit in the process.
The band has relocated to Brooklyn this year, drawing inspiration from a new environment. They returned to California as visitors recently – definitely a different experience, and not just because Matt was stung by a stingray while surfing!
Next, they played a studio version of “Trashcan,” off of their 2007 album, Ode to Sunshine. They performed without the trashcan lid that is usually a percussion staple during their live shows.
