Considering the fact that my Father, Fritz, was one of Dairy Queen’s best customers, and we, on more than one occasion, each ordered sundaes that featured six or more dips of ice cream, I got my love of ice cream honestly. It’s genetic. And now I know for a fact that I’m not alone. Baskin-Robbins did a survey and found that more than 75% of those questioned enjoy ice cream at least once a month. Once a month? Are you kidding me? Once a month? Well 42% indulge on a weekly basis (that’s more like it), and 5% enjoy ice cream once a day. Must of reached some Hemmerts for this survey. And as long as they were asking, they found more than half said that ice cream is worth the brain freeze headache when they consume the frozen treat like they were in a hurry or something. No pain, no gain. Or weight gain. 7 out of 10 prefer it in a cup, not a cone. More than 60% like hard ice cream better than soft serve. 30% likes it with cake, 27% with brownies, and 4% with french fries. Wait. Did they say french fries….with ice cream??? Well, I am a fan of the sweet/salty combo. So I shouldn’t knock it till I try it. Note to self…. Ice Cream is also a part of great summer memories. One of my favorites is when Sanders Dairy in my hometown of Piqua, Ohio did a “buy one cone, get the second for 1 cent deal. Who could pass up an offer like that?? I believe I was in high school then, and I brought my two adorable grade school sisters out for the big sale. The three of us got to Sanders and realized that with three of us, things got a little confusing. So my cone was regular price, Julie’s would be a penny, Joni’s would be regular and then…..oops. So I came up with the best solution. We would each get two ice cream cones. Brilliant. And it led to a lifelong memory. The three of us walking out of Sanders with a cone in each hand. Priceless.
So July is National Ice Cream Month. Do I need to draw you a picture? Get busy. Grab some people you love and cool off with your favorite flavor. It’s been hotter than you-know-what, so you deserve it. And as Ernie Banks and I would say…it’s a beautiful day. Let’s eat two!
