It’s the most American of holidays – Independence Day. Whether you’re loading up the car for a road trip, inviting the neighborhood for a barbecue, or begging the neighbors to stop shooting up the alley, a soundtrack is helpful. Our founders fought so we could be free … to rock.

1. The National Anthem – Radiohead
The pulsing rhythm makes me feel colonized all over again. In a good way.

2. The Star Spangled Banner – Jimi Hendrix
The rockets’ red glare had nothing on Jimi.

3. The Star Spangled Banner – Marvin Gaye
Never mind Rosanne or Xtina. Gaye’s soulful rendition at the 1983 NBA All Star game is one of the best.

4. Fourth Of July – X
“Whatever happened I / apologize/ So dry your tears and baby/walk outside, it’s the fourth of July

5. Independence Day – Ani DiFranco
What is it about July 4th that brings out the interpersonal fireworks? Must be the heat.
