Whatever your political, social or religious views might be, it cannot be denied that the participants and observers in yesterday’s annual Pride Parade were pretty happy. Much of this could be laid at the feet (or wheels, actually) of the mighty WXRT float, which drifted along the route on the wings of song, providing an island of stability and refuge amongst the teeming throngs (and thongs.)
Here’s a partial pride playlist as we resume the parade of life:
- “Love Has No Pride“ by Linda Rondstadt. This beautiful standard, written by Eric Kaz and Libby Titus, has been performed by many, but Linda’s version is the place to start.
- “Pride Of Man” by Quicksilver Messenger Service. An example of bad pride from Hamilton Camp. The Quicksilver version features the apocalyptic guitar stylings of John Cipollina.
- “Pride (In the name Of Love)” by U2. A tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. A factual error about the time of day does little to temper the power of this track.
- “I’m So Proud” by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions. A Chicago soul classic in 1964, it also gets a heavier treatment from Beck, Bogert and Appice some years later.
- “Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud” by James Brown. The Godfather of Soul creates the funkiest anthem in human history.
