In the early 1990′s, the internet was still a new phenomenon to hit the world. Years before digital music sites and online radio stations, WXRT was at the forefront of bringing the radio to the web. In 1995, WXRT was the first commercial radio station in Chicago to create a website for its listeners to learn more about the station, its DJ’s, and most importantly, the music. From listener polls to programming information to news on the latest events happening throughout Chicago, listeners could experience WXRT in an entirely new way.
Speaking of the station’s success as being at the forefront of music, then XRT Vice President and General Manager Harvey Wells stated that “[the station] hopes to bring the same spirit to cyberspace.” As seen through the website’s success over the past two decades, WXRT.com set the norm of what a radiostation’s website should be. Today, listeners can log onto WXRT’s website to listen to live on-air streams, participate in giveaways, and view photos and videos of XRT’s favorite bands and events throughout Chicago. The creation of WXRT.com has been vital to the success of the station and will continue to be so as the internet furhter evolves. We thank you XRT webmasters of the past for pushing the boundaries of radio in the past and bringing this station into the technological 21st century.
