[pullquote quote="Rock and roll is still the most important thing." credit="Billy Corgan"]Billy Corgan is keeping the Smashing Pumpkins‘ forthcoming album, Oceania under lock and key.
He stopped in this morning to talk with WXRT’s Terri Hemmert and explain his strategy for releasing the album. “I trust my fans. We’re going to put the music in their hands and they’re going to march out into the streets and they’re going to say ‘This is a worthy album’ or not.” Coming up on this Tuesday, the 12th, you’ll be able to stream all 13 tracks the album on 93XRT.com before it goes on sale June 19th.
Pumpkins’ manager Peter Katsis, “The Smashing Pumpkins created Oceania as an album experience, and it is intended for the process of the release to follow a path of inclusion, so that best efforts are made for all the fans hear it at the same time as press or radio.”
“The pace of modern life has increased, but getting anyone to sit down and listen to an album, in our case 60 minutes and six seconds, is really a challenge,” Corigan says. “Sometimes things have to be taken into their proper context. Sometimes the music requires a few listens.”
Well, this coming Tuesday, you’ll get that change, either online at 93XRT.com or aboard The Smashing Pumpkins Oceania Cruise — their album listening party.
Billy Corgan In Studio Interview Part 1
Corgan describes the new disc as an “album within an album” and mentions that he “was dead set on making an album where every song was just as valuable as any other.” The Pumpkins worked in an empty movie theater in Sedona during the early winter of 2011 while drafting primary versions of the songs. With a runtime of 60 minutes and six seconds, Billy has dubbed Oceania the “best [Smashing Pumpkins] album in over 15 years and their strongest offering since 1995′s Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness.”
