Ready for the ‘Roo? SPIN has put together a Bonnaroo mixtape for 2012 — this weekend, June 7-10 in Manchester, Tennessee. Bonnaroo (which takes its name from a New Orleans phrase for a good time, the French words “bon”, good and “rue”, street), will feature hundreds of artists including headliners Radiohead, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish, and the Beach Boys. Below, the SPIN mixtape highlights some of the up and coming artists to check out over the weekend.

Bonnaroo’s Tennessee summer climate will be the perfect setting to enjoy Dawes’ rootsy rock and roll take on Americana. “Million Dollar Bill” is a low key, piano-driven ballad complete with melancholy group harmonies and subtle acoustic guitar strumming. Kurt Vile’s song “Jesus Fever” is heavily folk inspired, but spaced-out in its delivery. Vile’s voice is a sleepy drawl disappearing in reverb and layers of tastefully textured guitars. When Vile sings, “I’m already gone,” his own apparent distance from the rest of the world is proven true.
The Antlers had an impressive headlining Sunday night set at last weekend’s Do Division festival here in Chicago, and “I Don’t Want Love” was a highlight of that performance. The Antlers rely on lush atmospherics and a characteristic falsetto vocal. The results are moving, and their sound is suited equally well for both the private listening experience and the communal festival experience.
