It was a hot and steamy night at the Riviera with a brisk dry wind that blew the sold out crowd in on the wings of song. (From the DJ introduction.) Alex Ebert aka Edward Sharpe aka Ima Robot, looking like a hippie revival preacher, led his 13 piece band through an energetic set of communal, organic music that was reminiscent of the some of the package tours of the 50s and 60s, with lots of different singers taking the lead.
The new and second album “Here” was well represented and delivered with an amazing array of instrumentation from trumpet to cello and songs that began and ended as hand clapping chants with the rapt audience following every nuance. Mr. Ebert spent a lot of time in the near stage crowd, often talking directly to audience members, while his partner Jade Castinos, wearing a delightfully retro teal dress, twirled and smiled and provided the perfect vocal counterpoint. Everyone went home sweaty and happy. The show was recorded for a future Sunday Night Concert broadcast.
