Beware and Be Grateful is so front-ended with great tracks, it’s easy to miss some of the gems that bring up the rear. So to speak. Maps and Atlases‘ second full-length begins with “Old & Gray”, a wistful song of regret about a failed romance. Or is it?
There’s so much going on both lyrically and musically in just about every song on Beware and be Grateful that one could think that Maps & Atlases aren’t just part of the Math Rock cluster they get lumped in to but Brainiac Rock, as well. Too smart for the room, in other words. Fortunately, I hear too much heart and soul in in these performances for that tag, though, and that humanity is why they’ll be my guest on this week’s Local Anesthetic. Half hour earlier than normal, people. 7pm sharp this Sunday night on XRT.
