Her music is known for its deep Gospel roots and religious tones, and now the Queen of Soul will be formally recognized by the Gospel Music Association for the genre of music in which she got her start.
Aretha Franklin will be honored at the 2012 Gospel Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony on August 14 in Hendersonville, Tennessee.
Growing up with her Baptist minister father, the Reverend C.L Franklin, the legendary singer got her early start performing Gospel music at his respected New Bethel Baptist Church where she frequently spent time with Gospel greats like Mahalia Jackson and Clara Ward, all of whom had a major influence on Franklin’s development as a singer.
Three of her eighteen Grammy Awards were awarded in the Gospel category, including the Best Soul Gospel Performance for her 1972 album Amazing Grace, which has sold over 2 million copies.
Among those being inducted along with Franklin include bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs, family band The Hoppers, contemporary Christian singer, Dallas Holm, the late TV evangelist Rex Humbard and Christian rock band Love Song, according to CBS News.
Since its establishment in 1971, the Gospel Hall of Fame has inducted over 150 members including Al Green, Mahalia Jackson, Dolly Parton and Elvis Presley.
Franklin’s induction into the Gospel Hall of Fame adds to her previous inclusion to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 where she made history as being the first woman inducted. Franklin was also recently awarded the Music Icon Award at the 2012 TV Land Awards in April.
