Some are calling Smashing Pumpkins’ Oceania their seventh album; other have counted down the discography and say this is the ninth album.
Regardless, Smashing Pumpkins fans are excited to have the next segment of the band’s “album within an album” concept–Oceania is part of Smashing Pumpkins’ experimental 44-song cycle called Teargarden By Kaleidyscope which began release in 2009.
The 13-track Oceania will be a series of first’s for the Pumpkins. It will be the first time the new line-up of the Pumpkins releases recorded material and the first Smashing Pumpkins album to come out on Corgan’s EMI subsidiary label, Martha’s Music.
Corgan has dubbed Oceania the “best [Smashing Pumpkins] album in over 15 years and their strongest offering since 1995-s Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness.”
According to the Smashing Pumpkins’ manager Peter Katsis, “The Smashing Pumpkins created Oceania as an album experience, and it is intended for the process of the release to follow a path of inclusion, so that best efforts are made for all the fans hear it at the same time as press or radio. We were excited to find partners in EMI Label Services that were equally passionate about the plan for the album release as well as being huge fans of the Pumpkins.”
