“The Wrecking Crew” And The Lost Art Of Studio Recording [Watch]

Is recording “live” in the studio a lost art? Filmmaker Denny Tedesco thinks it may be. He’s directed The Wrecking Crew, a documentary about the group of musicians that included drummer Hal Blaine, bassist Carol King and guitarist Tommy Tedesco (Denny’s father). You may not have heard of The Wrecking Crew, but you’ve heard their music: they played on records by some of the biggest artists of the ’60s, including Jan & Dean, Simon & Garfunkel and The Mamas & The Papas.

Arizona station KOOL-FM recently held a screening of the film with Denny Tedesco and special guest Hal Blaine, and they discussed how Brian Wilson working with The Wrecking Crew on Beach Boys sessions, and how recording music has changed over the past few decades.

The album Tedesco refers to is The Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light, which was recorded in frontman Dave Grohl’s garage (which was converted into a studio), and additionally, it was recorded to tape (as opposed to digitally).
