A lot of mainstream musicians become metaphorical puppets of the music industry; Foster the People took the idea one step further in a new music video for their song “Houdini” from their début album Torches.
While recording a video, a tragic accident happens and the band becomes, literally, shells of themselves, or “zombie” versions of Foster the People animated by green screen jump-suited actors and robotic wiring.
When the band “reanimates,” they become different, more “pop” friendly versions of themselves that make a director cry with happiness, music industry people cheer and party, and some creepy looking big-wig probably bank millions.

This is not the first time Mark Foster has worked with green screen. In an interview with Kimbra of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” fame and Foster’s collaborator on the Converse-sponsored song “Warrior,” the pixie-ish brunette said that green screen technology was used in the filming of the accompanying video because all the musicians couldn’t be together at the same time.
“We had such a deadline to work to and we were all kind of on tour at different places, so we just kind of had to work with what we could,” explained the singer. “Even the song itself, I was recording a lot of those vocals in an airport in Germany, like singing into my Macbook. You know it was a very 21st century collaboration.”
Houdini is my favorite song on the record. I can't wait for this to come out.—
