Theatre Of The Absurd

Firesign Theatre was a mix of the Goon squad and W.C. Fields. It was an American psychedelic version on the Marx Brothers and Monty Python. It was born on underground radio and was as if a Bizarro Franklin D. Roosevelt was addressing the nation on an FM stereo fireside chat. Their albums were masterpieces of intricate editing, sound effects and multiple layers of surreal comedy,  done in the days of mechanical editing and tape recorders. All of their efforts are worth a listen, but the first four from 1968 through 1971 are high water marks of recorded comedy. Founding member Peter Bergman died last week at 72.
