A George Harrison Sampler [Playlist]

George Harrison through the years.

[photogallerylink id=108664 align=left]It’s George Harrison‘s birthday weekend and we’re setting you up today with the patented XRT Rock and Roll Birthday bash. George was the third most important Beatle who brought a clutch of good songs to the studio (he would have preferred more), distinctive vocals, innovative guitar parts and an Eastern spirituality that informed several fab four tracks. He also loved Formula One racing, gardening and Monty Python.

He was also one of the coolest looking people ever. Here’s some of his best tracks:

  1. Art of Dying” from All Things Must Pass. A stirring treatise on the end-game with guitars (I think it’s Clapton) that cross the boundary between this world and the next.
  2. Govinda” by the Radha Krsna Temple. A prayerful chant produced by George from an album of devotional music. One of the catchiest hymns ever.
  3. Devil’s Radio” from Cloud Nine. A song about the little rudder that steers the big ship…the tongue. (WSTN…All commercials… all the time!) From the last studio album released during his lifetime.

  • Fun Fact

Bobby Whitlock played piano for the very first time EVER when they recorded BEWARE OF DARKNESS for ALL THINGS MUST PASS.

  • P.S.

George asked Bobby could play piano with gospel feel on BEWARE OF DARKNESS. Even though Bobby never played piano in his life he said he could. He heard his Mama every week in the house and in church, so he knew how it was supposed to go. He sat down and it happened naturally. He played very hard and very precise.
