The Who Sell Out
[pullquote quote="How about Who songs on commercials? 'Bargain' for a Wallmart spot? 'Magic Bus' for the CTA? 'I Can See for Miles' for Spex Optical?" credit="Terri Hemmert"]The Who Sell Out. Name of a marvelous album by the Who. And a headline used by a gazillion writers (now myself included) to report that Pete Townshend has sold the publishing rights to his amazing list of songs to the Spirit Music Group. That means you’ll be hearing more Who songs in movies, TV and on commercials. Some potential future projects with this music: a new run on Broadway for the Tommy musical, theatrical production of Quadrophenia, or a theatre space designed to showcase the music of the Who. Nobody is sayin how much Pete will take to the bank on this deal, but its millions of $$$$$. Pete says he plans to use this money to finance new solo projects. He sure won’t worry about paying the mortgage.
Now he won’t have to worry about the profit line of his forthcoming memoir, or the possible Quadrophenia tour in the fall. Takes some pressure off.
[photogallerylink id=57949 align=left]But how about Who songs on commercials? Bargain for a Wallmart spot? Bell Boy for Hyatt Hotels? Boris the Spider for an insect extermination service? Going Mobile for Metra trains? Magic Bus for the CTA? I Can See for Miles for Spex Optical? My Generation for AARP? Your turn. What do you think?
