Day Of Lin

[photogallerylink id=44454 align=left]It was Lin Brehmer Day Saturday by official proclamation of the mayor’s office and everybody was off (unless it was really important.) All the glitterati and colleagues and family and friends gathered at South Branch Tavern for a live broadcast and celebration of Lin’s 20th anniversary on the morning show. Plus, the Waco brothers rocked as only they can. Lin’s closing monologue was moving and eloquent and only biting the inside of my cheek prevented me from crying. The  XRT djs were asked to write an answer to the question what is Lin Brehmer really like and this is what I came up with:

XRT djs get a lot of tough questions.  Where is Terri Hemmert? How come the Leettes aren’t here? When are you gonna feature Wishbone Ash again?  The easiest one to answer:  What is Lin Brehmer really like? After working with Lin for many years,  walking in his early morning shoes (mine always match by the way) from time to time when he’s on one of his frequent luxury vacations.  I can tell you that heis a walking contradiction. He is a consummate professional, runs a tight board, has good award-winning pipes and is a stickler for accuracy. At the same time, his passion for music knows no bounds and he loves slide guitar as much as any man can. His enthusiasm and ear for a great tune have enriched his listeners and increased their record collections.  His writing can make you cry and laugh and think all at the same time and his helpless dancing, air guitar, insanely loud clapping and bellows of joy are the stuff of legend in the hallways and airwaves of XRT. He can frantically juggle 6 crises at the same time and then turn on the microphone and ask David Bowie about the ultimate fate of the universe. He is a man who has rarely been known to sleep. In short, the Lin Brehmer you hear on WXRT is the same man you might meet at a rock show or a charity event or a cold April Cub game.  There is no differentiation between Lin’s life and his work.

Something was in my eyes too, Frank. I remember being quite upset when Lin took over for Terry in the morning, similar to when Jon Stewart took over for Craig Kilborne on The Daily Show. Happily, I can report that 20 years later, Lin is part of my life. As I love hearing every Friday morning, “It’s f*&^ing GREAT to be alive!”
