[photogallerylink id=110224 align=left]Chicago weather and sports teams are variable, but the architecture and music are consistently good and they came together when Wilco began their 5 night, multiple venue December residency of sold-out XRT shows at the storied Civic Opera house.
Despite some personnel changes over the years, Wilco is one of the most cohesive bands in the world. They can play any kind of music well, but all of their numbers, be they pop or progressive, can only be performed by Wilco, the band. Their encore with Nick Lowe and Mavis Staples was icing on the cake, but it wasn’t their first take.
[photogallerylink id=97415 align=left]Nick Lowe played a fine opening set accompanying himself on guitar and he returned for the stirring encore of his “Cruel to be Kind” along with guest star Mavis Staples (Tweedy produced her last album) who belted out “You Are Not Alone” and everybody sang “The Weight” by the Band to send the capacity crowd home in a transcendent mood.
