It’s been 20 years since [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Queen[/lastfm] frontman [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Freddie Mercury[/lastfm] died. In 1995 the surviving members of the band put together and released several tracks they had been working on before his death on an album called, Made in Heaven.

Word comes this week from Queen guitarist [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Brian May[/lastfm] that he and drummer [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Roger Taylor [/lastfm]are combing the archives looking for more material that was recorded before Freddie’s death, and apparently they’ve found things, enough for not only a new album, but also enough to update their 2002 musical We Will Rock You. May was quoted in The Daily Star saying they’ve been “going through some old drawers” and adds: “As well as seeing what we can unearth, we want to do a new musical to follow We Will Rock You. The songs are there – it’s just a question of finding time to get the right production.”
Would there be a tour to follow? Who would be the lead vocalist? In 2005 [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Paul Rodgers[/lastfm], onetime lead singer for [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Free[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bad Company[/lastfm], performed as lead vocalist for Queen on a number of shows and one album. Paul has moved on since then but when asked recently if he would like to handle lead vocals if Queen were to perform at the opening of the 2012 London Olympics he told Billboard, “I would be open to something like that, I must say. We did great; I think we did fantastically well. We were up against potential disaster, really, and I think we really pulled it off. Toured the world a couple of times. Made a brand new studio album. I just didn’t want to do it forever – but for something like that would be ideal.”
Meanwhile, Queen will be receiving the Global Icon award at the MTV European Music Awards set for November 6. It’s not been announced yet who will be the lead singer for this one time performance, but Brian May has said that he’d love to work with [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Gaga[/lastfm].
