Mavis Staples and Win Butler of Arcade Fire Wow Audience at Outside Lands with Performance of “The Weight”

[photogallerylink id=76796 align=left]It’d be an understatement to say that gospel legend [lastfm]Mavis Staples[/lastfm] has had just a prolific music career. Since her breakthrough with [lastfm]The Staple Singers[/lastfm], she’s performed with everyone from [lastfm]Bob Dylan[/lastfm], to [lastfm]Ray Charles[/lastfm], to [lastfm]Wilco[/lastfm]’s Jeff Tweedy. Just this past weekend at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, she performed a duet of “The Weight” with the [lastfm]Arcade Fire[/lastfm]’s Win Butler, who played guitar and sang backup vocals. Not surprisingly, the crowd loved it.

[photogallerylink id=40226 align=left]Ever since footage of her singing “The Weight” with [lastfm]The Band[/lastfm] was used for Martin Scorsese’s 1978 concert documentary The Last Waltz, Mavis has performed the song live with a host of musical talent. In addition to the Outside Lands performance, we’ve dug up some footage of her belting it with [lastfm]The Decemberists[/lastfm]’ Colin Meloy at the Newport Folk Festival, as well as the scene from “The Last Waltz” that started it all.
