[photogallerylink id=93593 align=left]Motown is back, people! With a neo-soul/indie pop sound and an upbeat attitude, this L.A. group is ready to bring the funk. Their sound harkens back to the style of Motown and Stax, but they put their own spin on it to create their unique, guitar-less sound. But surprisingly, their big sound started with humble beginnings. Armed with his own church organ and more than a handful of emotions surrounding a recent breakup, frontman Michael Fitzpatrick started writing songs to distract himself. He started with “Breakin’ the Chains of Love”, written the same night he bought the organ. Desire for a horn section and other instruments began to creep through the cracks, so in comes Fitzpatrick’s college buddy James King, and with a few more phone calls, [lastfm]Fitz and The Tantrums[/lastfm] was born. Early 2009 marked the birth of the band’s first EP, Songs For A Breakup, Vol. 1, which got a hefty amount of radio play on local LA radio stations.

[photogallerylink id=93029 align=left]From there, the Tantrums went sky-high. Opening for Maroon5 on their Back to School Tour, and had several other appearances that got their name around. Finally in August 2010, they released Pickin’ Up The Pieces, their first full-length studio album. Since then, it’s been TV appearances, tours, and “MoneyGrabber” fever across the country, with the song being used on commercials and other popular programs daily. What’s coming up for the Tantrums? Plenty. They’re not only performing at Lollapalooza in Chicago, they’ve also just announced a 2011 tour with April Smith, along with stops in Belgium and England for a couple of festivals. And that’s just the month of August! The Tantrums will be keeping busy throughout the summer and beyond, and fans will (and should be) keeping their fingers crossed for a new album ASAP.
