Our friends over at MP3.com relaunched this week, and to celebrate we’re helping them give away some of the best new songs for free! Today, we’re featuring a live version of “The Cave” from Mumford & Sons.
One of the highlights from [lastfm]Mumford & Sons[/lastfm]’ breakout debut album Sigh No More, “The Cave” shows the London boys at their best. And today’s Free MP3 is an exclusive live version of the song, recorded by our friends in L.A. at a special daytime session during Coachella!
“The Cave” is a rousing, beer-soaked folk song that tells the tale of of a lover who was wronged by their careless partner, but is still determined to fix things.
“But I will hold on hope/ And I won’t let you choke/ On the noose around your neck,” lead singer Marcus Mumford belts out. It’s a tale of heartache, but the emotion is defiant.
Mumford & Sons have been one of the real breakout successes of this year, going from playing pub gigs to the Coachella main stage in a matter of months (and the aforementioned private gig at the KROQ Coachella House, where this version was recorded). And it is with good reason. Their music fits in the tradition of great English folk-inspired rock bands like The Waterboys, The Pogues, and Men They Couldn’t Hang–rough around the edges, but plenty sweet on the inside.
